🥬 Should Denver Worry About Cyclosporiasis?

Colorado officials say that cyclosporiasis, the intestinal illness infecting people across the United States, is not likely to become an outbreak in the Centennial State. See some other states where the outbreak has hit harder. [NPR]

  • Is cyclospora a problem here? As of early June, more than 100 people in the state had contracted the cyclospora parasite that causes cyclosporiasis, but that number is “fairly typical” according to the Colorado Department of Public Health and experts believe there is no increased risk. [KDVR]
  • How does it spread? It’s most commonly spread by eating via raw fruits and vegetables that have been contaminated with microscopic amounts of human feces. The parasite causes diarrhea and other gastrointestinal symptoms, like bloating and nausea.[Denver Post 🔐]
  • How can you prevent cyclosporiasis? To avoid infection, wash your hands with soap and water before and after preparing food, wash all produce under running water, and use a brush to clean hard produce like cucumbers. [CDC]

🍼 City Takes Baby Step Toward Improving Childcare

City Council passed an ordinance that eliminates the city’s licensing requirements for opening new childcare businesses, which range from $25-$200. This change will not affect how the state enforces health and safety standards, inspections, and other quality checks, which are governed by a separate process. Proponents say the ordinance will eliminate one of many barriers to opening a facility and represents a “first attempt” toward solving the childcare supply crisis. [Denver Post 🔐]

🛣️ Colorado Drivers Need to Cool Off, Report Shows

Colorado ranks fifth in the nation for fatal collisions caused by aggressive driving, and road rage incidents continue to rise. If you see an aggressive driver, Colorado State Patrol says don’t engage. Instead, pull over and call their aggressive driving hotline at *277, which received more than 30,000 reports last year.
