What Denver's Talking About

🎪 Kyle Clark on Moderating the GOP’s Primary Circus
9News journalist Kyle Clark joins the podcast to talk about his bizarre experience moderating a recent debate between challengers in the GOP primary for governor, State Sen. Barbara Kirkmeyer, State Rep. Scott Bottoms, and ordained minister Victor Marx. The televised event went so far off the rails that it caught the attention of HBO’s Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, who was so perplexed by this corner of Colorado’s political landscape that he proclaimed Kyle himself the actual winner. 🧐 Polis Blocks Tech Regulations With Record Vetoes
During the recent legislative session, Gov. Jared Polis vetoed a record 12 bills, many of which aimed at regulating the tech industry, such as placing restrictions on autonomous vehicles, limiting AI to set prices for consumers and wages for employees, and more. Other vetoes include a measure that would have made it easier to form labor unions and allowed people to sue ICE authorities who violate constitutional rights. His 12 vetoes represent the most in his eight-year tenure, and underscore his alignment with the tech sector. [Axios]
⚖️ Detention Facility Operator Sues Over Health Requirements
The GEO Group, which operates the state’s sole immigration detention center, is suing Colorado officials to block a new law requiring regular health and safety inspections. GEO Group is arguing that the law interferes with federal authority and increases its operational burdens. Lawmakers pushed for legislation after reports surfaced of poor conditions at the Aurora facility. State officials say they plan to defend the law and ensure safe and humane treatment of detained people. [Colorado Newsline]
🦌 I-70 Project Could Make the Corridor Safer for Wildlife
The six-year Vail Pass I-70 project is nearing completion, and will feature five new wildlife underpasses, safer realigned curves, and avalanche protections.
