🚗 Could more speed cameras make Denver streets safer?
March 6, 2026 · — Natalia Aldana
Good morning, Denver! In case you missed it: City Cast just dropped a brand new podcast. It’s called “Your City Could Be Better” — because it could be! Every week, our CEO David Plotz chats with our colleagues across 13 City Cast teams to discuss the weird things our cities are trying, where they’re growing, and how they’re succeeding.
This week’s episode takes us to Salt Lake, where a national think tank wants to institutionalize unhoused people, regardless of what locals think 👀

Today's Must-Know

📸 Denver to Install Automated Speed Cameras
As the city saw a record 93 street fatalities in 2025, Denver officials said they will soon launch an automated speed camera program in the hopes of curbing traffic-related deaths and serious injuries. [Denverite]
- How it will work: The speed cameras will allow the city to automatically ticket drivers who are speeding. Cameras are expected to be installed on sections of Federal Boulevard and Alameda Avenue, two of Denver’s most dangerous traffic areas. [Axios]
- Timeline: The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure first announced this program last year. The city has not specified when the installation will take place.
- Why are fatalities climbing? According to Denver police data presented to the City Council transportation committee on Wednesday, speed played a major role in fatalities, about 21% of 2025’s total fatal crashes.
- Broader context: The city has also promised to conduct a comprehensive review of street safety. Denver has a Vision Zero goal to eliminate street and car crash fatalities by 2030 – but the numbers aren’t going down, as 2025 saw the highest amount of traffic deaths in the city since 2013.
- Plus: The ongoing battle over a proposed safety redesign along another stretch of East Alameda has continued to be contentious, with Mayor Johnston even calling some folks on one side of the debate “Trumpian” in their approach. We spoke with a civil engineering professor to get a better understanding of how the physical design of Denver’s streets can make them more or less safe. [City Cast Denver 🎧]

Stella’s Coffee Haus in Platt Park recently announced that it would no longer offer Wi-Fi to customers. The quaint spot has long been a refuge for college students and work-from-home types seeking internet access — so, could this drastic change drive business away or be a boon for folks looking for a more social space to enjoy a latte? ❄️ Slushy Snow Could Impact Commute
A strong storm is expected to drop 14 inches of snow in the mountains and could bring slushy conditions to the Denver area and the plains today. This may impact your morning commute, and weather advisories and travel warnings in the mountains are expected through the evening. [9News]
💸 Health Startup Accused of over $1B in Fraud Scheme
Zynex Inc., a health care startup based in Englewood that was once considered a success, has been accused of orchestrating a massive health care fraud, allegedly billing patients and insurers for unneeded pain devices and supplies. Where Is It?

Last week’s answer: This ornate wood paneling decorates the inside of Denver’s Molly Brown House Museum at 1340 Pennsylvania St. The late-19th century Capitol Hill home serves as a prime example of Queen Anne-style Victorian architecture with Richardsonian Romanesque influences designed by the locally renowned architect William Lang.
Once the home of Margaret “Molly” Brown — philanthropist, activist, and famed Titanic survivor — the house was saved from demolition in 1970 by a group of local preservationists who went on to form Historic Denver. In 1972 the house was officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Today, it operates as a museum filled with artifacts and exhibits that commemorate Brown and life in Denver at the turn of the 20th century.
