⚖️ Is ICE still making unlawful arrests?
February 9, 2026 · — Peyton Garcia
Good morning, Denver! FYI: Don’t plan your next trip to the DMV for Feb. 13-18. The department's local offices, kiosks, and online services will be shut down for statewide “technology upgrades” on those days 🚘 ⚠️

What's CITY Talking About

⚖️ The Latest: ICE in Colorado
- Protesters Target CU Regents: More than 100 people rallied on the CU Boulder campus last week to demand the university’s board of regents cancel its contract with Key Lime Air, the Colorado-based airline that has been transporting detainees for ICE. The board was scheduled to discuss the contract in an executive session on Friday. [Denver Post 🔒]
- Unlawful Arrests Continue: A group of local lawyers representing immigrants alleges that Colorado ICE agents are continuing to make unlawful, warrantless arrests, directly violating a preliminary injunction ordered by a federal judge in November. Lawyers are now asking the judge to intervene. [CO Sun]
- DPS Considers New ICE Policy: Denver’s school board is set to discuss a new policy proposal later this month that would prohibit teachers from cooperating with federal immigration agents without a warrant and bar school officers from actions that could put students at risk of deportation. [Chalkbeat]
- Immigrant Advocacy Group Gets an Apology: Juntos Community has received an apology and the funding it was owed from the Denver Foundation after the foundation withheld funds and requested the immigrant advocacy group remove the word “undocumented” from its public-facing materials in order to draw less attention. [Westword]
🚏 Will the L Line Get the Ax?
Denver’s Department of Transportation and Infrastructure is preparing to launch a year-long transportation study of Welton Street, the main thoroughfare in Five Points. Officials say they’ll consider traffic operations, land use redevelopment, economic impacts, and community input to transform the area into a “transit-rich corridor” and, critically, determine what should become of the street’s long-debated light rail. [Denverite]
- Dive deeper: Councilman Darrell Watson, who represents the area, shared his thoughts on the L Line when we spoke to him last summer. [City Cast Denver 🎧]

🗳️ Lisa Calderón Explains Why She’s Running For Mayor
The community organizer and criminal justice advocate joined us on the podcast to discuss what she would do differently to balance the city’s budget, how her approach to homelessness would vary from Mayor Johnston’s, and why she thinks Denver is finally ready for her type of progressive leadership. 🏳️⚧️ Ruling Expected in Children’s Hospital Discrimination Lawsuit
A Denver District Court judge is expected to announce a ruling this week in the lawsuit against Children’s Hospital Colorado filed last month by a group of parents over the hospital’s decision to pause gender-affirming care for minors. The hospital says it didn’t want to, but had no choice in the face of defunding threats by the Trump administration. The plaintiffs, all parents of transgender children, accuse the hospital of “just rolling over and complying.” [CO Sun]
🛶 Sloan’s Lake Boathouse Is Getting an Upgrade
The boathouse at Sloan’s Lake Park is slated to get a $7 million makeover later this year. The building, which currently acts as storage space for the city’s parks and rec department, will be converted into an event space, complete with a catering kitchen, concession stand, and room for 171 people.
- But what about the lake? That new events center won’t be as nice if the lake dries up and disappears forever — which isn’t out of the question. [City Cast Denver 🎧]
