🪧 Local meatpacking workers vote to strike
February 6, 2026 · — Adrian González
Good morning, Denver! It’s producer Adrian González in for Peyton today.
As the late iconic Catherine O’Hara character Moira Rose in Schitt’s Creek once said, “awards” is my favorite season. That’s why I’m restarting our City Cast Denver Oscars Pick’em competition! Make your picks before the awards show on March 15 and compete for bragging rights — and maybe even some City Cast Denver merch.

What's CITY Talking About
🪧 Meatpacking Workers Vote to Strike
99% of workers at the JBS factory in Greeley voted in favor of the strike, according to UFCW Local 7. The union is accusing the meatpacking plant of unfair labor practices, among them allegedly pressuring workers to work through injuries, and failing to negotiate a new contract in good faith. 🚔 No Charges for Parents of Evergreen High School Shooter
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s office announced that it would not bring charges after investigators failed to determine how the shooter acquired the handgun used in the shooting last year. JCSO said it’s closing the investigation unless there’s new evidence. [9News]

Could Denverites Say Yes to Denser Neighborhoods?
The idea to “upzone” Denver — change land use rules to make it easier to build duplexes, fourplexes, and the like across the city — is one bold idea local YIMBYs are pushing to address a critical shortage of housing. But it has to make it onto the ballot and be passed by voters first. Are there enough Mile High residents who will actually say “Yes In My Backyard”? [City Cast Denver 🎧]
🚙 Parking Ticket Dispute Hearings On the Rise
In the nine months before Denver eliminated the option to dispute parking violations online, the system averaged six hearings per month. Since the new system was instituted in October 2025, the average has spiked to an average of 206 per month. Councilmember Chris Hinds says the new system puts an unnecessary burden on drivers and is pushing for the Denver Office of Transportation and Infrastructure to make changes. [CBS News Colorado]

Where Is It?

Last week’s answer: In what might be the most correct answers we’ve ever received on a Friday Trivia Photo, last week’s picture was indeed the rock climbing wall at the REI Denver flagship store on Platte Street near Confluence Park. The outdoor retailer is located inside the historic Denver Tramway Powerhouse building that more than a century ago served as a power plant for the city’s trolley system. Along with this 48-foot indoor climbing wall, the store also boasts an outdoor mountain bike track and a 1-acre “green roof garden” atop the below-ground parking garage.
📣 Congrats to this week’s quickest correct guessers:
- Mike F. was the first to write in with the correct answer!
- But Christie I., Shandra K., Christina B., Jodi K., Joshua D., Kathryn W., Emilie S., Dora G., Heather F., Danielle L., Tiffany O., Tessa R., Jena L., Cori A., and ~60 others (!!) weren’t far behind!
This Week’s Photo:

🕵️ You’ll find this wall of eclectic art somewhere that is a little weird, a lot of chaos, and exceptionally counterculture 🤘 Do you know where it is? Be among the first to respond with the right answer and you’ll get a special shoutout in next Friday’s newsletter!
A special thanks to City Cast Denver reader Joe C. for sharing this week’s pic! 👏
📸 Want to submit a photo? Send me a snapshot of somewhere in Denver, and I’ll consider it for an upcoming photo trivia segment!

Remember when we thought malls were dead? Well, a big investor is throwing in $250 million to renovate the Cherry Creek Shopping Center, including “upgraded storefronts that create an even more inviting environment for discerning shopping and world-class brands.” No word yet on what that means, but construction is scheduled to begin this year.
