⚖️ City Council takes on ICE
January 12, 2026 · — Peyton Garcia
Good morning, Denver! FYI: Nearly two dozen Denver metro gas stations distributed unleaded gasoline that was contaminated with diesel fuel at the end of last week. The tainted mixture could cause costly damage in a vehicle. See this list of the affected gas stations, plus what to do if you received contaminated fuel ⛽ ⚠️

What's CITY Talking About

⚖️ AG Weiser on Cell Phone Bans, Rent Algorithms, and Running for Governor
Attorney General Phil Weiser filed his 50th lawsuit against President Trump last week, this one over the administration’s freezing of child care funding and support for low-income families. Weiser says the president’s actions are part of a “revenge campaign” against Colorado for continuing to incarcerate former County Clerk Tina Peters. So we’re tuning back into a conversation we had with Weiser last year when he first announced his run for governor. [City Cast Denver 🎧]
❌ Council to Consider Banning Face Masks for ICE Agents
Denver City Council members Flor Alvidrez and Shontel Lewis are asking city leaders to consider prohibiting federal immigration agents from wearing face coverings while carrying out local operations. California has a similar law that is currently being challenged in court. [Axios Denver]
- In other ICE news: Documents obtained by the ACLU last week confirm ICE’s plans to open a new 1,300-bed detention facility in the Colorado town of Hudson, about 30 minutes northeast of Denver. It will be called the Big Horn Correctional Facility and managed by private prison company the GEO Group. [Westword]
👀 Would Polis Actually Release Tina Peters?
In a recent interview with CBS Colorado, Gov. Jared Polis suggested he’d be willing to consider clemency for convicted election-tamperer Tina Peters. “She got a sentence that was harsh,” he told the news outlet of the 70-year-old’s nine year prison sentence. State officials have so far rejected President Trump’s demands for Peters’ release, resulting in what appears to be several retaliatory measures against Colorado. Other state leaders are urging the governor to keep Peters behind bars. [CBS; Denver Post 🔒]
⛷️ Strike Ends, Telluride Ski Resort Reopens
Telluride Ski Resort leaders and the local ski patrol union reached a new contract agreement on Friday, ending a 13-day ski patrol strike that had the small mountain town’s peak tourism season on pause. The new deal doesn’t address all of the workers’ grievances, union representatives admit, but they were faced with mounting pressure from a community concerned that the resort’s continued shutdown would result in the town's complete “economic collapse.” [CO Sun]
