What's CITY Talking About

🪧 What We Saw at Denver’s ‘No Kings’ Rally
The ‘No Kings’ protests drew tens of thousands of people to downtown Denver and cities across Colorado over the weekend. The majority of gatherings were peaceful, but when a pro-Trump supporter shouted a homophobic slur at Denver protestors as they marched near Union Station, the resulting clash went viral. 👮 Denver’s Sheriff’s Deputies Are Burning Out
Denver’s Sheriff Department only has 67% of its deputy positions filled and is losing officers faster than it can replace them. Former deputies say the department is woefully overworked and undervalued by city leadership, creating “dangerous situations” for inmates and officers alike. [Denverite]
- The concern: The current situation will likely be exacerbated by Mayor Mike Johnston’s pledge to crack down on crime by sending more people to city jails for mental health and addiction care.
🚲 Bike Lake Debates Reaches Boiling Point
Local business owners and residents who have spoken out against bike infrastructure projects say they are victims of intimidation and retaliatory measures from bike advocates, including sudden waves of poor web reviews, business disruptions, vandalism, and doxing. Some business owners say they’ve even been personally blamed for cyclists’ deaths. [Denver Gazette 🔒]
🌭 Biker Jim is Back! … Again!
“Biker Jim” Pittenger of local hot dog fame will bring his exotic sausages back to Denver diners from his new stall at the Avanti food hall next month. The Mile High hot dog king has been slowly rebuilding his brand after a nasty fallout with his former business partner forced him to step away from his namesake business of two decades. [Westword]
