🪶 Is Indigenous Peoples’ Day canceled?

October 3, 2025 Ā· — Peyton Garcia

Good morning!

WOW! We are blown away by the support we’ve received so far, and we are SO CLOSE to hitting our membership goal for this campaign 😱 We just need a few more of you to take the leap! This is the final day of the drive — help us get there!

We need members to exist. Membership is just $10/month (or $100/year). Is this newsletter worth that to you? We love what we do. If you love what we do, help us keep doing it!

Be part of our mission: We don’t just live here — we live here on purpose and with purpose, by showing up for our neighbors, paying attention to the local conversation, and celebrating what makes this place home.

By becoming a City Cast Denver Neighbor, your support will not only allow this product to thrive in a financial sense, but you’ll be contributing to our mission by connecting more deeply with our community and with other Denverites.

You’ll also get our weekly curated guide to local events, the opportunity to shoutout your favorite local businesses and organizations in the newsletter and on the podcast, and access to exclusive events and content.

šŸŽ Today is also the LAST DAY to get a ā€œNeighbors Make Denverā€ tote bag, and the chance to win a $250 gift card to Bonanno Concepts restaurants (which include Mizuna, Luca, Osteria Marco, Salita, Dumplin’, or Vesper Lounge.)

What's CITY Talking About?

🪶 Is Indigenous Peoples’ Day canceled?

The co-chairs of Denver’s American Indian Commission wants to call off the city’s first official Indigenous Peoples’ Day event, which is scheduled to take place Oct. 13, marking the first time Denver will observe the day as a paid city holiday. The co-chairs cited unspecific conflict among commission members and with Councilwoman Stacie Gilmore that has created an ā€œunsafe and unsustainable environmentā€ on the board. [Denver Post šŸ”’]

  • But: Councilwoman Gilmore and other commissioners have indicated the event will still take place from noon-6 p.m. in City Park — just without the co-chairs.

šŸ›ļø Mayor Mike’s Downtown Shopping Spree

If Union Station is Denver’s living room, will the Pavilions become its rec room? Or maybe its man cave? Former Republican congressional candidate and chronically online commentator Valdamar Archuleta joins the City Cast Denver Friday news round-up to parse everything we know so far about the mayor’s announcement earlier this week that the city wants to buy the increasingly vacant Pavilions mall on 16th Street. šŸ”‹ Colorado Ups EV Cash Incentive

Now when Coloradans opt to swap their gas guzzler for an electric vehicle, the state’s clean energy officials will subsidize $9,000 — up from $6,000 — through their cash-for-clunkers program. The increase fills part of the gap left by the $7,500 federal EV tax credit that ended this week due to President Trump’s Big Beautiful Bill Act. [CO Sun]

  • In case you’re wondering: Colorado’s cash-for-clunkers program is not paid for through the state general fund, which is facing a significant deficit.

šŸØ Development Fight Over Union Station Hotel

The old Barth Hotel building near Union Station, which until earlier this year was affordable housing for seniors, has been sitting empty for months after building conditions forced the owner to sell. Now, two downtown developers are fighting to take over — one wants to bring back affordable housing for seniors, the other wants to return the property back to a functioning hotel. [Denverite]

Where Is It?

Last week’s answer: You’ll find this eccentric sign post at the corner of South Broadway and Archer Place near Goodwill. It is a city-commissioned public art installation titled ā€œSigns of Lifeā€ from artist Jamie Pawlus. It’s part of a series of whimsical signs along the corridor that are meant to ā€œinspire moments of contemplation and humor.ā€

šŸ“£ A special shoutout for this week’s correct guessers:

  • David B. was the first to write in with the correct answer!
  • But Char H., Ben R., Leah R., Tiffany H., Luissa K., Jordan J., Dan K., Lissa L., Adrian P., and Sara weren’t far behind!
  • And an extra special thank you to Laurie K. who submitted this photo! šŸ™
