New details emerge in Evergreen shooting
September 12, 2025 · — Peyton Garcia
Good morning, Denver. Peyton here — returning from a nice little vacation. It’s good to be back in your inboxes. Let’s jump into the news ☕ 🗞️ ⬇️

What's CITY Talking About?
⚠️ The Latest on the Evergreen Shooting
Authorities have identified the 16-year-old shooter who opened fire on fellow classmates at Evergreen High School earlier this week. The investigation is ongoing but officials described the suspect — who died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound — as “radicalized through an extremist network.” The suspect's parents could face criminal charges depending on how the firearm was obtained. Two victims remain hospitalized. A resource and information center for the community is currently operating at 1928 S. Hiwan Drive. [KDVR]
- More: The Evergreen shooting coincided with the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk in Utah, leaving the grief and politics of gun violence to again take center stage in America. [City Cast Denver 🎧]

🎻 Denver Philharmonic Rejects Federal Grant on Principal
The Denver Philharmonic Orchestra turned away an $8,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts after the federal agency said award money was contingent on recipients aligning with the Trump administration’s DEI policies. The orchestra says it wants to be able to “authentically welcome everybody” without fear of punishment. [Westword]
💸 Support East Colfax Businesses During Construction
The East Colfax Community Collective is resurrecting the East Colfax Small Business Relief Fund, which was originally established to aid local small business owners during COVID. The neighborhood group is inviting Denverites to donate their time and money again to support the area in the midst of BRT construction and a Denver Water pipe replacement project. - Something in return: Denverites who visit an East Colfax business and upload a selfie to social media with the hashtag #WeBackTheFax will be entered to win a prize!

Where Is It?

Last week’s answer: This mural, titled “A Sunday Afternoon in North Denver,” debuted on the patio of Little Man Ice Cream’s “milk jug” location in the lower Highland neighborhood earlier this summer. It was one of the final projects painted by local muralist Ken Marley — aka Aqua One — a self-described “modern Chicano artist,” before he relocated to San Diego. The mural depicts the neighborhood’s 1907 historic St. Patrick Mission Church, a landmark that is near to Marley’s heart.
Marley describes the work as “truly the most significant and meaningful piece” of his career. “I poured my heart and soul into it,” he said. “With this mural I wanted to bless the neighborhood I grew up in.”

Navigating Denver Real Estate
Q: When does it make sense to build an ADU in your backyard or on your property to help generate additional income? - Grace M
A: It makes sense to build an Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) in Denver when you have space, plan to stay long-term, and want to generate rental income. With costs typically $200K+, ADUs can eventually offset your mortgage, increase property value, and provide flexible housing for tenants or family members.

Leaf-peepers beware: Law enforcement officials are skipping the warnings and going straight to towing illegally parked cars along Guanella Pass as we enter peak fall foliage season 🍂 The narrow two-lane mountain pass historically sees up to 20,000 visitors a day this time of year 😲 So do yourself a favor and wait for that designated parking space to open up.
