Weiser vs. Bennet vs. Buc-ee’s

Happy Friday! It’s the start of what is hopefully a long weekend for most of you 😌 City Cast Denver is taking Monday off to observe Labor Day. We’ll be back in your inbox Tuesday morning!

What's CITY Talking About?

CU Boulder is retiring Ralphie VI because of her growing “indifference to running.” (Me too, Ralphie.) Ralphie VI is the sixth American bison to serve as the university’s live mascot known for charging the field before each half of every home football game. 🛫 Traveling? Brace for Heavy Holiday Traffic

Nearly 430,000 travelers are expected to pass through Denver International Airport this weekend, with today and Monday being the busiest. Airport officials encourage travelers to arrive early and be prepared for long security lines. [KDVR]

  • Pro-tip: Visit FlyDenver.com to check live TSA wait times, flight status, parking lot availability, construction updates, and interactive maps. You can also reserve your place in line at both east and west security locations in advance.
  • Time to kill? Here’s why I love DIA.

🏭 Another JBS Whistleblower Comes Forward

A former safety instructor at JBS USA has filed a lawsuit against the Greeley meatpacking plant, alleging that management pressured her to falsify safety records. The employee, who is Muslim, is also accusing her supervisors of religious discrimination. [Denver Post 🔒]

  • A poor track record: JBS has previously been caught violating child labor laws, accused of human trafficking, and scrutinized for dangerous work conditions.
Sen. Bennet Takes On Buc-ee’s, Mayor Johnston vs. the Reddit Mob, and Cracker Barrel’s Mile High Flop

🧑‍💻 What Johnston Did — And Didn’t — Say in His AMA

Mayor Johnston joined Reddit this week to answer questions from anonymous Denverites. He touched on everything from traffic enforcement and homelessness to the Broncos stadium — but did the city leader’s answers live up to constituents’ expectations? [City Cast Denver 🎧]

⛽ AG Weiser Weighs In on the Buc-ee’s Debate

Sen. Michael Bennet has said he’s opposed to the potential plans for a second Buc-ee’s mega gas station in Palmer Lake just south of Denver. He described the development as going directly against “Colorado values” and decades of conservation efforts. We decided to ask Colorado Attorney General Phil Wesier — who is running against Bennet in the 2026 race for governor — for his take on the topic:

“My focus as attorney general and as the next governor is on doing everything I can to push back against Trump's and [Interior Secretary] Burgum's illegal actions to sell off our open spaces and undermine our protections of our land, air, and water — not on where a Buc-ee's should or should not be built. … Local matters are best left to local towns, cities, and their voters to decide.”

Last week’s answer: You can spot this mural (yes, it’s Beetlejuice!) at the corner of Evans Avenue and Gilpin Street in the University neighborhood. It’s on the side of Jelly — a Denver brunch staple — at 1700 E Evans Ave. (If you know the artist, let us know! 📧)

📣 A special shoutout for this week’s correct guessers:

  • Jasmine R. was the first to write in with the correct answer! 👏
  • But Andy B., Noah C., Robin F., Leah J., Lucy F., and 8 others weren’t far behind!
