💼 Denver cuts nearly 200 jobs

August 19, 2025 · — Adrian González

Good morning, Denver! It’s been about three lifetimes since I’ve been on an old rollercoaster, but it’s still sad to see our iconic rides shut down for maintenance. There’s no reopening day in sight for the Cyclone at Lakeside, but apparently the Twister III at Elitch’s reopened last week. 🎢

💼 City to Cut 7.6% of Workforce

Denver announced Monday that 171 city employees will be laid off this week, and 665 open positions will be eliminated, in an effort to address a $250 million budget deficit. Details on affected departments are expected later this week, but the cuts have already drawn criticism from unions and City Council members. [Denverite]

Navigating Denver Real Estate

Q: What is a home auction? How do they usually go? And is that really the price?-Hannah A

A: A home auction can mean different things. A Public Trustee Auction signals foreclosure. But more common today are marketing auctions—homes listed far below market value to spark bidding wars. Sellers aren’t obligated to accept offers; it’s often just testing the market, so that “auction price” isn’t always the real price.

Spotted Around Town

We love spotting something unusual or surprising around Denver. Like how far along the new King Soopers in Virginia Village off Colorado Boulevard has come 🤩

The Kentro Group, the same development firm behind this King Soopers project, is also planning to build a five-story apartment building at the corner of Pearl Street and Louisiana Avenue in Platt Park. It’s rumored not only that a new Trader Joe’s might go into the bottom floor of the complex, but that it would be one of the only TJs in the region to sell beer and wine. Kentro only confirmed that they plan to break ground in 2026.

Have you seen something fun or curious around town recently? We want to see it too!
