What's CITY Talking About?

Residents swim at the Mestizo-Curtis Park pool June 16, 2021.
Regarding the pool’s iconic Emanuel Martinez mural, resident Eileen Feltman told the Denver Landmark Preservation Commission: “If blocks can be cut out and preserved for Banksy and the Berlin Wall, the same can happen here." (Hyoung Chang/The Denver Post via Getty Images)

🏗️ Residents Push Back on Mestizo-Curtis Park Pool Project

Design plans for the renovation are going back to the drawing board following a Denver Landmark Preservation Commission meeting this week. Current and former residents criticized the plan’s safety elements, as well as the decision to demolish Emanuel Martinez’s 1983 “Eyes on the Park” mural. [Westword]

🏀 Former Nuggets Mascot Sues Kroenke

Drake Solomon, who formerly played the part of Rocky the Denver Nuggets beloved mascot, is suing the team for disability discrimination. Solomon says when he told his supervisors he needed time off for a hip replacement surgery last fall, they called him “unreliable,” and shortly after fired him.

  • It’s personal: Drake Solomon’s Rocky roots run deep. He took on the Rocky mantle from his dad — Ken Solomon, the O.G. Rocky — upon his retirement after 30 years in the role. [Westword]

🍷 Denverites May Soon Be Able to ‘Sip and Stroll’ in RiNo

A real estate company that owns a plaza near Mission Ballroom has formally applied to create Denver’s first common consumption area, allowing people to “sip and stroll” with alcoholic beverages. The proposed boundaries for the license would stretch from 40th to 42nd streets and from Brighton Boulevard to Wynkoop Street. [Denver Business Journal 🔒]

  • Next steps: The proposal must go through a public hearing process before being considered by City Council.
