Johnston’s Big Bond is Headed to the Ballot

Despite initial skepticism and frustration, City Council nearly unanimously agreed to refer Mayor Johnston’s $950 million Vibrant Denver bond package to voters in November. The package will be split into five different ballot questions covering five different project categories: transportation and mobility; city facilities; parks and rec; housing and shelter; and health and human services.

  • One tweak: Before approving the proposal, council made one amendment to the package — they pulled a total of $13 million from three other projects (improvements to Red Rocks, street paving, and upgrades to city facilities) to be reallocated to affordable housing. [Denver Post 🔒]

Former Comal Workers Allege Wage Theft

Six immigrants who formerly worked at the award-winning Comal Heritage Food Incubator are accusing the owners of wage theft and discrimination. Comal was an incubator kitchen that offered career and skill-building opportunities to immigrants in the community. It was operated by the nonprofit Focus Points until it closed for good earlier this year. The former workers are asking the Denver Auditor to investigate the organization for labor law violations. Denver Embraces the Speed Bump

Since installing its first-ever public speed bumps in 2022, the city has laid out plans to bring even more traffic-calming devices — such as traffic circles and rubber curbs — to Denver roadways. Additions to the Westwood and Athmar Park neighborhoods are up next, with construction along several stretches of southwest Denver set to begin in September. [Denverite]
