🚨 Why Denver teens have cops on watch
July 8, 2025 · — Peyton Garcia
Good morning, readers! FYI: Local health officials have confirmed Denver’s first case of West Nile virus this season. Here are some tips on how to protect yourself 🦟

What's CITY Talking About?

🍻 2 Broadway Breweries Bid Goodbye
TRVE Brewing Co. will pour its last pint this Saturday after nearly 14 years on Broadway. It’s just one of many staple businesses to close or leave the area in the last year, calling again into question what the future of South Broadway is, exactly. [City Cast Denver 🎧]
- Another one bites the dust: Banded Oak Brewing, another South Broadway brewery, also just announced it will close in September. It promised to remain open as a venue for what could be the last Underground Music Showcase ever at the end of this month. [Denver Post 🔒]
🚨 Police Prepare for More ‘Teen Takeovers’
Denver police have confirmed they’re aware of plans for more “teen takeovers” this weekend, reportedly at Elitch Gardens, Lakeside Amusement Park, and Town Center at Aurora. In a related incident last month at The Shops at Northfield, the organized gathering of some 300 teenagers resulted in multiple violent disturbances. [Westword]
- What’s going on? "I've never seen these kids more angry, more disconnected," said Jason McBride, an inner-city youth violence prevention specialist. Have a teen? We want to hear your take. Call or text us at 720-500-5418 ☎️ or email us at [email protected] 📧
🏡 Mayor Johnston’s New Plan for Affordable Housing
After Denver voters rejected the mayor’s affordable housing sales tax proposal last November, Johnston is pitching his Plan B: tax breaks for developers. A new pilot program in collaboration with the Denver Housing Authority will offer tax rebates to developers who build housing for households making between $60,000-100,000. [Denverite]
🤝 Union Agreements Met for King Soopers, Safeways Workers
UFCW Local 7 union leaders reached tentative contract agreements over the weekend with both Safeway and King Soopers management (pending member ratification). The King Soopers agreement is being celebrated as all gains, no concessions. The Safeway agreement marks the end of a nearly three-week strike by union employees. [CPR]

Spotted Around Town
We love when we spot something cool/weird/wacky around Denver. Like this discreetly placed mural tucked away in Civic Center Park’s Greek Amphitheater.

We don’t know who painted this, or how we’ve never noticed it before — but it definitely ups the structure’s Athenian vibes 🏺
Have you seen something fun or curious around town recently? We’d love to see it, too.
