🏠 Gov. Polis sides with landlords
June 2, 2025 · — Adrian González
¡Buenos días! It’s City Cast editor Adrian González back to cure your Monday blues.
I’m also reminding you that we’ll be interviewing Denver Police Chief Ron Thomas on the City Cast Denver podcast soon and we’d love to know what you want us to ask him. Send us your questions about the Denver Police Department.

What's CITY Talking About?
🏠 Polis Blocks Rent Algorithm Ban
Gov. Jared Polis rejected legislation that would have banned software that helps landlords set rent prices in Colorado. The governor said the bill “may have unintended consequences of creating a hostile environment for providers of rental housing,” but tenant advocates claim it helps landlords collude with each other to inflate rents. [Colorado Sun]
- The chief advocate for local landlords told us the backlash against rent-setting algorithms like Real Page are misguided because tenants can always negotiate down their rent. [City Cast Denver 🎧]
😷 Confirmed Measles Cases at DIA
Colorado health officials said a vaccinated Arapahoe County resident tested positive for measles when he landed at the airport on May 13. It is the seventh confirmed case in the state — the most since 1996. [Denver Post 🔒]

🏛️ A Growing Trend in ICE Detentions
Federal agents detained a man, woman, and their young child at the Denver Immigration Court immediately after a judge had dismissed a deportation case against them. It’s part of a growing national trend that immigration advocates say helps the federal government bypass legal protections. [Denver Post 🔒]
- Rising scrutiny: The Trump administration labeled Denver and many other counties in Colorado as “sanctuary jurisdictions,” threatening funding cuts if local authorities don’t cooperate with deportation efforts. [CPR]
🦏 What Would You Name a Giant Rhino?
There’s a 30-foot rhino sculpture going up near 29th Street and Arkins Court and the city wants residents to help name it. Submissions are open through June 5. [Westword]
