What's CITY Talking About?

🚨 ICE Detains Celebrated Local Immigrant Activist
Jeanette Vizguerra, an undocumented immigrant who first came to national attention in 2017 after spending months resisting deportation in the sanctuary of local churches, was arrested by federal officers on Monday afternoon. [Denverite]
- What local leaders are saying: Gov. Jared Polis, Senators John Hickenlooper and Michael Bennet, and several others have publicly rebuked the detainment. Denver Mayor Mike Johnston called the arrest a “Soviet-style political persecution … under the guise of immigration enforcement.”
- Dig deeper: Activist and former state representative Tim Hernández explains why Vizguerra’s detention is so concerning amid the ongoing fight for immigration rights. [City Cast Denver 🎧]

💰 Denver Commits Another $1.5M to 16th Street Mall
In a 10-3 vote, City Council agreed to hand over $1.5 million to the Downtown Denver Partnership for a series of summer “activations” such as concerts, festivals, and weekend markets ahead of the mall’s grand reopening later this fall — a makeover project already three years and $175 million in the making.
- High stakes: City leaders and proponents of the revitalization project are banking on its success to revive a city center that has been struggling ever since the pandemic. But some councilmembers were unable to justify the latest expense in Denver’s “current budget environment.” [Denver Post 🔒]
