February 3, 2025 · — Adrian González
Good morning! It’s your favorite tío (and City Cast editor) Adrian González here to kick off the week.
Between questionable award season nominations and the increasingly probable arrival of the Sundance Film Festival in Boulder, it’s an interesting time to be a film fan. That’s why I’m excited to bring back the City Cast Denver Oscars Pick-Em game! Make your predictions ahead of the awards on March 2 for a chance to win City Cast Denver merch.
Let’s get into the news.

What's CITY Talking About?

🚲 2900 Block of Larimer Reopens to Cars
In an email sent out late Friday evening, the RiNo Art District announced that cars would be returning to the 2900 block of Larimer over the weekend. The surprise statement marked the end of an experiment born early in the pandemic to make the area more walkable. A recent survey found 92% community support for keeping the block car-free, but some local business owners disagreed. [Denver Post 🔒]
- Cyclists push back: More than a hundred activists gathered on Sunday to protest the return of cars to the once-pedestrian friendly block. Hey Denver spoke with The Block Distilling co-founder Kraig Weaver, who confirmed that he and some of his neighbors are hoping to bring back the car-free block, but it’s unclear when and how they might do so. 🚧 Trump Admin. to Condition Transit Funding
A new memo from the U.S. Department of Transportation lays out plans to prioritize funding for communities with high birth rates and laws allowing local police to comply with federal immigration enforcement. Colorado has neither. [CPR]
🚬 Could Voters Overturn the Flavored Tobacco Ban?
Some local business owners are attempting to gather the 9,000 signatures required to put a question on November’s ballot that would overturn Denver’s new ban on flavored tobacco. “This is one that has a big negative impact on the business community and on the health care choices that adults can make for themselves,” explained one of the group’s leaders. 🧑💻 Will Denver’s Tech Scene Bounce Back?
Denver’s tech boom in the 2010s produced major success stories and reshaped downtown, but 18 months of layoffs and empty downtown offices have us wondering if a tech rebound might help downtown come back to life. We chat with tech analyst Jeff Casimir about AI, layoffs, work-from-home, and the Elon Musk effect in Denver. [City Cast Denver 🎧]
