🤑 How much will your TABOR check be?
September 20, 2024 · — Peyton Garcia
It’s Friday! Be on the lookout: Earlier this week, former President Donald Trump said he plans to come to Colorado sometime in the “next two weeks” to visit Aurora, the city that he erroneously claimed on the debate stage was being “taken over” by a Venezuelan gang.

What's CITY Talking About?

🏨 Debut Delayed for New Eco-Friendly Hotel
The opening of the highly anticipated Populus Hotel (aka “that cheese grater building” near Civic Center Park) has been delayed until Oct. 15 for undisclosed reasons. The big debut of the country’s first “carbon-positive” hotel — and its posh rooftop bar — was originally scheduled for Sept. 18. [Westword]
💰 How Much TABOR Money to Expect Next Year
A nonpartisan legislative forecast released this week estimates Colorado taxpayers will receive a TABOR refund between $181 and $571 for single filers depending on income, as well as a dip in state income taxes. [Axios Denver]

🐑 Should Denver Ban Its One Slaughterhouse?
A group of animal advocates collected enough signatures to put a slaughterhouse ban on Denver ballots this fall, but there’s only one slaughterhouse in the whole city — Superior Farms in Globeville. So what will this meat-loving city do? We’ve got two political insiders on the pod today to prognosticate. [City Cast Denver 🎧]
🛣️ City Changes Course on Broadway/I-25 Project
The row of six houses sandwiched between I-25 and Broadway have long been slated for demolition as part of a project to improve traffic flow in the area. But last week, city officials unexpectedly abandoned the demo plans, saying the project will shift away from a car-centric focus and more toward the needs of pedestrians. [Denverite]

Where Is It?

Last week’s answer: You can find this saddle-toutin’ rainbow trout on the newly reopened section of 16th Street Mall at Larimer Street.
While I couldn’t find an official title or artist for the sculptures, (if you know, please message me!) locals have affectionately been referring to this installation as “Howdy, Trouty!” In a recent thread about the art on the r/Denver subreddit, one user says this little fella is specifically a greenback cutthroat trout — Colorado’s state fish. Another chimes, “This should be a state law: that all pictorial and sculptural depictions of rainbow trout shall include one wearing a cowboy hat.”
For the many who guessed these guys were along the Golden riverwalk — good guess, wrong trout 😉
👏 Big claps for our correct guessers:
- Amelia K. was the first to write in with the correct answer!
- But Olga J., Macklin N., Jonnica A., Patrick B., and Keith A. weren’t far behind!
