🫖 A legendary landmark’s ‘tragic, slow death’

September 6, 2024 · — Peyton Garcia

TGIF! Wow, yesterday’s cool cloudy weather was such a treat! If it feels like this summer has been hotter than usual, that’s because it has been — one of Denver’s hottest summers on record, in fact 🥵 Woof.

What's CITY Talking About?

🫖 RIP Brown Palace?

Ever since The Brown Palace Hotel & Spa was acquired by an out-of-state management company in 2018, current and former employees say the beloved 132-year-old Denver landmark is “dying a tragic, slow death,” suffering from broken doors and pipes, faulty boilers, and concerns with management. 📜 The Great Property Tax Compromise

Following the recent special legislative session, Gov. Jared Polis signed a property tax compromise into law this week that will cut taxes for residents and some businesses across Colorado by a total of about $255 million. It will also limit how fast property taxes can increase. In exchange for the new legislation, two ballot measures — that, if passed, would have slashed property taxes by a whopping $2.4 billion — have been withdrawn by sponsors. [CO Sun]

⛰️ 14ers Are SO 2020

In 2020, a record number of hikers climbed Colorado fourteeners. But since then, those numbers have dropped every year, resulting in a 37% decline since the pandemic peak. [CPR]

The answer to last week’s clue: Detour Bakery!

🏅 Congrats to Nancy, who solved the riddle and was the winner of last week’s raffle! We asked Nancy to share some of the things they love most about biking in Denver.

What did you enjoy about the secret destination and/or the ride over?

“I was so excited to see Detour Bakery was the clue for Week 8. During the pandemic I would take a long ride as early as possible every Friday (in any weather) and would swing by Detour on my way home and pick up breakfast for my family and friends. I would drop off at people’s doors as I biked along. I haven’t been to Detour as often since returning to work and was so excited to get a chance to bike over and get breakfast. Great bakery and great supporters of bike commuting!”
