July 9, 2024 · — Peyton Garcia

What's CITY Talking About?

🇺🇸 Polis for President??
As confidence in President Biden wavers following his dreadful debate performance on June 27, Democratic Party leaders are privately tossing around names of potential candidates that they think could stand a better chance against Donald Trump this November — including our very own Gov. Jared Polis. [Axios Denver]
💰 Mayor Proposes Affordable Housing Sales Tax
Mayor Mike Johnston is proposing a 0.5% increase to the city’s current 8.81% sales tax rate to raise funds for affordable housing efforts. Officials estimate the increase could generate about $100 million annually. If approved by City Council, the decision will be in the hands of Denver voters this November. [Denver Post 🔒]
🚘 Police Crack Down on Expired Plates
Starting July 15, the Denver Police Department is launching a month-long “targeted enforcement period” to put the kibosh on a problem that has been rankling rule-abiding Denverites for months: cars driving around care-free with expired plates. [City Cast Denver 🎧]

🚏 RTD’s ‘Open Elevator’ Safety Policy Sees Success
RTD officials report a significant drop in public safety complaints and service calls at two of the stations where they have been keeping elevator doors open when not in use to discourage “illegal activity.” RTD now plans to implement the policy at six more stations over the next few months. ❌ Colorado’s Mystery Monolith Removed
In case you missed it, the strange metal monolith that mysteriously appeared on a dairy farm in Larimer County two weeks ago has been removed. The property owners said the number of visitors was becoming too much to handle. [CPR]
