🍿 Alamo Drafthouse employees unionize
June 13, 2024 · — Peyton Garcia
Goodest of mornings to you, dear reader! You are reading the 800th Hey Denver newsletter! 🤯 WOW. What a milestone. And I quite literally couldn’t have done it without you 🫶 Just by opening this email everyday, you’re supporting my work. But if you’d like to take it a step further…

What's CITY Talking About?

🍿 Local Alamo Drafthouse Workers Unionize
Two metro Denver Alamo Drafthouse locations — Westminster and Sloan’s Lake — have successfully unionized. Employees of the dine-in theater chain across the country have been organizing union efforts since last fall, claiming they’re overworked and underpaid despite record revenue gains from the “Barbenheimer” double movie debut last summer. 🚍 A Tough Week for RTD Riders
Newly designated “slow-down zones” on some RTD light rail lines have riders feeling frustrated. The speed restrictions are due to recent track issues spotted by safety inspectors and have unfortunately coincided with the planned station closures as part of a massive RTD maintenance project downtown. Riders are reporting commute delays of up to 45 minutes or longer. RTD officials couldn’t answer how long the disruptions might last, but announced that CDOT’s Bustang will be available to help make up service coverage. [Denver7]

⚖️ Meet Denver DA Candidate Leora Joseph
Denver District Attorney Beth McCann will not be seeking re-election, meaning the race is on for a new DA. Democrats John Walsh and Leora Joseph will both appear on this summer’s primary ballot, but what sets them apart? Hear directly from Leora Joseph on the City Cast Denver podcast today. - Psst! We shared our interview with candidate Walsh yesterday!
We can’t let our jails be the mental health treatment centers. And so the initiatives I’m working on now have allowed me to look for creative ways that local municipalities, local district attorneys can make change in that space.
