What's CITY Talking About?
🌊 Beware Flooding Today
A scheduled maintenance flush of the Cherry Creek Dam may cause low-level flooding in parts of the creek today, potentially submerging crossings and sections of the Cherry Creek bike path. Officials warn the public NOT to attempt to cross flooded areas. [9News]
🚔 Officials Seek Citywide Security Boost
City officials are requesting $24 million to boost security at Denver homeless and newcomer shelters, as well as security for a number of city departments including Arts and Venues, Clerk and Recorder, and General Service. However, officials hope they won’t actually need all of the funds. [Axios Denver]
- Why it matters: The city has recently had to increase the security presence at local homeless shelters following a double homicide at the former DoubleTree shelter. [City Cast Denver 🎧]
❌ Polis Vetoes 6 Almost State Laws
Of the hundreds of new bills that state lawmakers sent to Gov. Polis’ desk this year, the governor has so far vetoed six of them. Most notably, Polis rejected a bill to fight wage theft in the construction industry. Other vetoes involved measures on school HVAC systems, political meetings at work, background checks for youth sports organizers, the destruction of municipal solid waste, and health insurance restrictions. On average, Polis vetoes about five bills a year, except last year when he vetoed 10. [CPR]

🪦 How a Denver Cemetery is Saving History and Water
Can the dusty grounds of Denver’s oldest graveyard set the example for a more eco-conscious industry? One reporter’s visit to Riverside Cemetery reveals a lot about the history of Colorado’s people and the way we use our natural resources. [City Cast Denver 🎧]
The irony of a cemetery is that for it to live, people need to keep dying.

Denver Chatter

Hey loyal readers and listeners. We love to hear from you! Got a question about something going on in the city? A spicy take on a trending topic? Commentary on a recent podcast episode or newsletter? We want to hear it 💌 Here’s the latest from the inbox:
🚘 Denver’s Worst Parking Lots
In a follow-up to our episode on the worst parking lots in Denver, Betty M. says:
- “I was surprised that the Denver Convention Center garage didn't make the list! As soon as you enter the garage, you start climbing a spiral of doom, with a trail of scapes up the wall from the unfortunate cars that came before, and a sign encouraging you not to give up before you reach the first floor. What a way to welcome convention-goers to Denver!”
❓ Full Tank Food Park
Amy S. is wondering if anyone has the tea on this place:
- “I was excited to hear about Full Tank Food Park last year because it is pretty close to me, but I have never seen it open. I followed on social media but there hasn't been any posts since February. Do they plan to have something this summer? I just can't find any info online and never see anything when I pass by.”
🍸 Best Hotel Bars and Restaurants
After we shared our roundup of the best hotel bars and restaurants in Denver, Colleen A. wrote in to suggest Wildflower at LoHi’s boutique Life House hotel.
- “The food and drinks are always exceptional. Chef Aiden is making some of the best food in the city. When I think of food that captures the essence of Colorado, I think of Wildflower. Everything on the menu, the decor, the entire experience, is very carefully thought out. Usually we make a reservation to go to dinner, but also enjoy stopping by on a weeknight for dessert or some drinks at the bar.”

The Secrets Beneath Denver's Oldest Operating Cemetery
From Clara Brown and Silas Soule to veterans of the Civil War, Riverside Cemetery is the final resting place for some of the most important people in Colorado’s early history. But with its parched land and dusty roads, it’s easy to think this graveyard has been abandoned. As Westword’s Skyler McKinley found out, not only is Riverside still very much in business, it’s also a potential model for a more eco-conscious burial industry of the future.
