♻️ Why Denver’s compost rollout is dragging
May 17, 2024 · — Peyton Garcia
TGIF, Denver! I’ve got your usual weekend event roundup below — and hey, do you have something you want featured on our events page? We’ve got a nifty new submission form! Check it out 👇

What's CITY Talking About?
♻️ Where’s My New Compost Bin?
In 2022, the City of Denver unveiled its new “Pay as You Throw” trash system in an effort to course-correct its abysmal waste diversion rate. As part of the program all Denverites were to receive new compost carts. But now two years later, our diversion rate has only improved 3% and just a fraction of residents have their new carts. What’s the deal? According to officials, the city wants to make sure residents are educated before handing out carts, but at the current pace, many residents won’t see their new compost bin until 2025. [Westword]

I'm not trying to be rude, but I would have hoped a couple years down the line, that we would have a greater [diversion rate] increase.
👮 How Some Cops Get Away with Lying
Despite a 2019 law meant to curb dishonesty among law enforcement officials, a sweeping investigation by the Colorado News Collaborative has found that many deceitful officers are still getting away with lying. Sometimes the infractions aren’t reported to the proper authorities due to a lack of time or resources. But the primary problem? Truthfulness is often subjective. [CPR]
🤖 Dems Divided by AI
Though Colorado lawmakers passed a first-in-the-nation bill to better regulate artificial intelligence this year, detractors of the bill are calling on Gov. Jared Polis, a known champion of the tech sector, to veto the measure, arguing that it will “stifle innovation and competition.” Attorney General Phil Weiser, on the other hand, openly supports the plan in order to protect consumers by helping them identify “what’s real and what’s not.” [Axios Denver]

🏒 Do the Avs Still Have a Chance?
The Av’s leading scorer Valeri Nichushkin was suspended this week over undisclosed issues. What does this mean for the team’s chance at a Stanley Cup? And will the Av’s forward be able to get the help he needs? [City Cast Denver 🎧]
