📉 Feds Relax COVID Tracking Requirements

Beginning tomorrow, hospitals will no longer be required by federal authorities to report COVID-19 hospital admissions. Even though hundreds of Americans are still dying from the virus every week, the numbers are no longer “overwhelming” hospital systems. The state’s COVID-19 dashboard will still display data on positivity rates, deaths, and vaccinations. [CPR]

🧑‍⚖️ Prosecutors Will Retry Christian Glass Case

Following a two-week trial and three days of deliberation, a Colorado jury found former Clear Creek County sheriff’s deputy Andrew Buen guilty of reckless endangerment in the 2022 fatal shooting of Christian Glass. However, the jury could not agree on a verdict for the charges of second-degree murder or official misconduct. Prosecutors have announced they will retry the case. [CO Sun]

📋 Mayor Boasts ‘Newcomer Playbook’ for Other Cities

Though city officials are only a few weeks into the rollout of a recently improved new arrival program, Mayor Mike Johnston is going so far as to call Denver the “national leader on this topic.” He’s even created an instruction manual on his approach to be distributed to other cities facing similar problems. 📢 Pro-Palestine Protests Continue on Auraria Campus

According to state demographer Elizabeth Garner, the number of older adults (age 65 and over) in Colorado is trending upward quickly. In fact, it’s expected to more than double by 2050 — that’s a major change for a state that currently ranks as one of the “youngest” in the country. So whether it’s for you, your family members, or your neighbors, here are some of Denver’s best programs and resources for older adults.

🏠 Sunshine Home Share

This nonprofit home-sharing program matches older adults (55+) who have room to spare with younger individuals looking for somewhere to live. The arrangement is a mutually beneficial exchange of companionship and household assistance for affordable rent! Win-win.

☎️ Social Call

This national program from nonprofit Front Porch connects volunteers with senior citizens across the country for regularly scheduled phone or video calls as a way to bridge generations and combat senior loneliness through social connection.

🏳️‍🌈 The Center on Colfax

Denver’s primary hub for the LGBTQ+ community caters to older members with its West of 50 programming, offering fun social outings, special events, and educational / supportive resources for “healthy living and creative aging.”

📚 Denver Public Library

DPL is a great resource for finding free programs, activities, events, and assistance geared toward Denver’s older adult community. Never miss a thing when you sign up for the Older Adults Services monthly newsletter.

Why Did DPD Arrest Gaza Campus Protesters? Plus, a Weird Bookstore Mystery

As students on the Auraria Campus join pro-Palestinian protest campouts across the country, the response from legislators, police, and college administrators has varied. Over the weekend, local lawmakers published a letter in support of the demonstrations, but cops still arrested dozens of people.

Have a great rest of your day! I’ll just be over here considering whether to quit my day job to cuddle cows instead 🐮
