🏀 Nuggets superfan sues
April 24, 2024
Great news, Denver! There are still tickets available for tomorrow’s Mile High transportation conference at DU — The Road Ahead 2024 — where our very own City Cast Denver podcast host Bree Davies will be hosting a live podcast recording and panel with local transit experts! We’ll see you there! 🚙 🚚 🚌 💨

What's CITY Talking About?
📜 ‘Protecting the Freedom to Marry’
Though same-sex marriage has been legal across the U.S. for nearly a decade, the Colorado constitution still contains now-defunct language forbidding it. A newly proposed ballot measure being considered by state lawmakers would ask voters to approve a constitutional amendment to formally remove the verbiage. [CPR]
- In other LGBTQ+ news: Up until now, transgender people with felony charges on their record could not legally update their names to match their gender identity. On April 19, Gov. Jared Polis signed off on a new law to change that, effective immediately. [Westword]
🏀 Nuggets Superfan Sues
Longtime Denver Nuggets superfan Vicki Ray is fighting back after the team’s owner, Kroenke Sports & Entertainment, revoked her season tickets and banned her from games. Ray, who believes KSE just wanted to resell her tickets at a higher price, filed a lawsuit claiming breach of contract, failure to act in good faith, and emotional distress. [Denver Post 🔒]
🐾 Sled Dogs for Adoption
A dog sledding company in the tiny mountain town of Snowmass Village is shutting down after officials raised concerns over the living conditions of the dogs. The company’s owner reports that 50 out of 75 of the dogs have been adopted out for free, but the remaining 25 huskies still need homes. [Aspen Daily News]
🚏 Can We Really Fix RTD?
Gov. Jared Polis joined some leading Democrats in a push to reform RTD — but the proposal, which could have been a major shakeup for the transit provider’s elected board, proved controversial. Rep. Meg Froelich explains what happens now that the bill has changed so drastically and why RTD reform could still be one way to go. [City Cast Denver 🎧]
- Plus, a security boost: RTD has announced plans to enforce round-the-clock security at its stations beginning May 5. This is just the latest security boost that comes as part of the agency’s promise to crack down on illegal activities and address public safety concerns. [Denverite]

🪿 That One Goose at City Park
Elizabeth W. is curious about one peculiar City Park wildlife fixture:
- “[There’s] a resident Toulouse Goose that hangs with all the Canada Geese. It's (how do you sex a goose?) my favorite! How did this French beauty end up with the Canada riffraff? Was it living on a farm and decided to head out to the city?”
🤤 Denver’s Best Munchies
After we shared some of our favorite stoner-approved snacks ahead of 420, we received some equally delicious recommendations:
- Ricky from Villa Park suggests the Elotes Chorreados at El Bombon Neveria on Federal, describing them as “a wild over-the-top combo of elotes and nachos.”
- John from Northeast Park Hill recommends the mochi donuts at Mochinut in Aurora, which has “the best weird food in this world,” as well as Snowl’s ice cream and boba for the “ultimate stoner dessert.”
- Jenny in University Park asks: “But have you ever had an ice cream sundae bar with Fruity Pebbles as one of the topping selections? It will blow your mind.”
🏒 Where to Watch the Avs
As far as where to catch the Colorado Avs’ playoff action? Tim K. says Sobo 151, hands down.
- “Best hockey bar in the city, plus Czech food and beer. What’s not to like? Plus, their soup of the day is always yummy, and their drink prices have to be some of the cheapest in the city — $7 for a Jack and Coke?”

Is the State About to Boost Funding for RTD?
RTD has faced serious issues in the recent past — driver shortages, route cuts, and a lack of funding. But when it comes down to how to fix it, not much has been accomplished. Rep. Meg Froelich explains what could be next in the legislative approach to reforming a struggling public transit system.

For my fellow bookworms: A recent analysis ranked Denver No. 11 out of 500 for “Best Cities for Book Lovers” 🤓📚 A perfect reason to browse this list of popular fiction novels set in the Mile High.
