What's CITY Talking About?

🏀 🏒 Let the Playoffs Begin!
Playoffs for the NBA and the NHL kick off this weekend, and both the Nuggs (reigning champs) and the Avs (three-time Stanley Cup winners) are in the running. The NBA unveiled the schedule for Round 1 this week — we’ll be facing the LA Lakers at Ball Arena on Saturday. The Avs will start their playoffs against the Winnipeg Jets, but the official schedule depends on how tonight’s regular season finale finishes.

🚏 Pushback on Transit Reform Bill
This week, RTD board members unanimously voted to oppose the sweeping transit reform bill being pushed by state Dems and backed by Gov. Jared Polis. Board members and other opponents went so far as to call the bill — which would reduce the board’s number of elected seats and hand over more influence to the governor — “antidemocratic.” [Denverite]
- What’s the big deal? We spoke with former State Speaker of the House Terrance Carroll about why so many local leaders think this bill is bad news. [City Cast Denver 🎧]
👀 Investigation into Denver Fire Chief
An investigative report from CBS News is bringing scrutiny upon recently reappointed Denver Fire Chief Desmond Fulton. The investigation found that Fulton rang in $42,000 in extra pay by claiming comp time for things like attending memorials and firehouse dinners over the last three years. The City’s public safety director has issued a third-party investigation into the matter. Fulton says he believed he was following longstanding department protocols. [Denver Post 🔒]
