🧑‍🍳 Denver’s 2024 James Beard Finalists

Chef Penelope Wong, of the cult-followed food truck Yuan Wonton, and chef Matt Vawter, formerly of the acclaimed local restaurant Mercantile, have both made the coveted cut for the 2024 list of James Beard Award finalists in the category of Best Chef. Denver’s Michelin-starred Kelly Whitaker (BRUTØ, Basta, and The Wolf’s Tailor) is being considered for Outstanding Restaurateur. Winners will be announced in June. [Denver Post]

🔎 Councilwoman’s ‘Questionable Spending’

Following an investigation into first-term council member Flor Alvidrez’s spending habits, a Denver ethics board has concluded that while she was “reckless” with city money, she did not technically violate any official ethics codes. The board did, however, recommend updating the Denver Code of Ethics. Hostile workplace complaints alleged by former employees of Alvidrez were not investigated. [Denverite]

🚔 Denver’s New ‘Crime Hot Spots’

Last month, Mayor Johnston announced his plan for tackling gun violence in the city — turns out, it’s not so different from his predecessor. From 2020 to 2022, former Mayor Michael Hancock targeted “violent crime hot spots” around Denver with individual safety strategies. Now, Mayor Johnston has shifted the focus to five new “hot spots.” City officials say the data shows success — but not everyone agrees. [Denver7]

🚎 Denver’s Old Streetcar

The lost era of the Denver streetcar is remembered fondly today, but transit expert and author Jake Berman clues us into the not-so-rosy reality of the Mile High’s historic streetcar. Your Questions on @DoBetterDNVR, Members Clubs, and Those ‘Green’ Buildings

Conversation about the Instagram account @DoBetterdnvr and its decision to post photographs of unhoused people caused quite a stir on last week’s podcast, so the City Cast Denver crew is diving into the controversy. Plus, we respond to listener comments.

A few more notes: Today is National Ramen Day! 🍜 Looking for somewhere to celebrate? We recently sat down with two ramen experts to round up the best. Apparently, it’s also National Hug a Newsperson Day — so if you spot me in the wild today, say hello! 🤗 (Also accepting City Cast Denver membership sign-ups in lieu of hugs 😉)
