What's CITY Talking About?

🛴 Are E-Scooters the Answer to a Greener Denver?

Denverites who hate electric scooters may have to learn to love them. New research from Colorado State University shows that those zippy two-wheelers are the “most effective” at limiting greenhouse gas emissions over their life cycle compared to all other modes of transportation, including … walking? 🤔 [CO Sun]

  • Cue the debate: Are scooters a transportation godsend for Denver? Or an absolute menace? Maybe both. [City Cast Denver 🎧]

🏢 City Secures Funding for Former Denver Post Building

Denver City Council has OK’d $90 million in financing for the purchase of the empty 11-story Denver Post building across from Civic Center Park. Officials plan to convert the vacant space into courtrooms and meeting spaces for Denver County Courts. [Denver Post]

🚩 Money Missing for Minority-Owned Business Grants

The Domestic Emerging Market Investments (DEMI) Fund — the partnering entity charged with distributing money from the City’s $15 million fund to support minority-owned small businesses — is calling for an audit of the City and alleging “willful misconduct.” Danielle Shoots, managing director of the DEMI Fund, says officials only ever handed over $6.9 million of what was promised and are now claiming the money is all but gone. [9News]

I'm a Black woman in the money business for 15 years. It's so traumatizing to [allege] I'm not giving you receipts. You guys might think it's flippant, but it can ruin my life.

🐾 Holding Out Hope for Ullr

It’s been one year since Ullr, a border collie-Rottweiler mix, disappeared in Colorado’s backcountry after being separated from his owner in an avalanche. Earlier this year, Ullr was spotted — in “survival mode,” but alive and apparently healthy — on a trail camera set up by his owner Jacob Dalbey in the area he went missing. Most recently, Dalbey found canine tracks he believes to be his pup’s. [Axios Denver]

Where Is It?

Patio at Wonderyard Garden and Table
Wonderyard Garden + Table (Peyton Garcia / City Cast Denver)

Last week’s answer: Wonderyard Garden + Table ✨🦋

This brand new bar and restaurant opened earlier this month in Five Points. It offers sharable bites, Insta-worthy cocktails, and whimsical “Secret Garden” meets “Alice in Wonderland” vibes. Come for the spinning teacup tables, stay for the pork carnitas torta 😋

Is Buc-ee’s actually worth the hype? (RJ Sangosti / The Denver Post / Getty Images)

Buc-ee's vs. Johnson’s Corner, Widening Peña Blvd., and Elevator Crimes?

Is Denver still in the business of widening highways? After a contentious city council vote this week, the future of transit on Peña Boulevard is in question. In more transportation news, Colorado went nuts for the opening of a Texas chain gas station, and we taste tested its famous road snacks. All that, plus more news from the week.
