🔎 Why 652 criminal cases are being reopened
March 12, 2024
Good morning, Denver! FYI, Vice President Kamala Harris is set to visit Colorado today. Details on where exactly she’ll be or if her appearances will be open to the public have not been released 🇺🇸

What's CITY Talking About?
🔬 Tampered DNA Evidence
An investigation has revealed that Yvonne “Missy” Woods, former forensic scientist with the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, intentionally manipulated DNA evidence in 652 criminal cases throughout her 29-year career with the state. The CBI estimates it will need to retest as many as 3,000 DNA samples at roughly $1,000 a piece. [CO Sun]
One of the most pressing questions is whether any person has been wrongfully convicted as a result of misconduct.
⚱️ More Unclaimed Cremains
Still more cremated remains have been discovered at the Englewood residence of former funeral home owner Miles Harford who is currently in police custody for keeping a dead body in the back of his hearse for over a year. Authorities also found dozens of cremains in his house during a search last month. Harford faces charges of forgery, theft, and abuse of a corpse. [AP via CPR]

🏘️ Power to Mobile Home Tenants
A cooperative of residents in the Westwood neighborhood’s Capital City Mobile Home Park are poised to purchase the park from its current owner with help from a local nonprofit. This will be one of the first trials of Colorado’s new Mobile Home Park Act — a law that affords mobile home park residents the opportunity to buy the park themselves if an owner intends to sell or redevelop — which went into effect in 2020. - Why it matters: We took a closer look at the predatory nature of some mobile home park real estate deals in a time when affordable housing is critically scarce. [City Cast Denver 🎧]
📱 A New DPS Social Media Policy
The Denver school board is considering a new social media policy that would mandate when and why board members are allowed to delete comments on posts and/or block people from commenting on their official public accounts. [Chalkbeat]
