✊ DAM workers unionize

March 8, 2024

Good morning, Denver! Don’t forget this Sunday, March 10, at 2 a.m. Colorado will spring forward for daylight saving time (meaning you’ll lose an hour of sleep, but yay for later sunsets 🙌) And if you’re wondering about that lingering effort to adopt permanent DST, here’s where that legislation stands… ⏰

What's CITY Talking About?

📰 The Chopping Block Comes to CPR

This week, Colorado Public Radio laid off 15 employees, primarily impacting the audio and podcast departments. Despite exponential newsroom growth in the last decade and a half — during which 166 new staffers were added — CPR reports that its expenses outpaced revenue by $2.3 million in the 2023 fiscal year. • Local news matters: It’s not easy (or cheap!) making a daily podcast and newsletter — trust us, we’d know. Consider supporting our work here at City Cast Denver by becoming a member. For as little as $8 a month, you can get special members-only perks, ad-free listening, and the warm fuzzy feeling of supporting local journalism.

⚖️ East High Shooting Victims Plan to Sue

The two East High School administrators who were shot by a student last year have plans to sue the district, the school board, and several fellow staff members for failing to follow proper protocols despite being aware of safety concerns, specifically an incident in which the offending student was seen with a gun in class. ✊ DAM Employees Vote to Unionize
Workers at the Denver Art Museum have voted 120-59 to unionize following calls for higher wages, more transparency, and better safety procedures. They’ll be represented by a labor union working on behalf of 55 other museums and 129 cultural institutions around the nation. [Denverite]

🏠 Landlords Need Tenants, Newcomers Need Shelter

Last month the Johnston administration announced that it would close four of its temporary newcomer shelters and reinstate the stay-limit at operating shelters. Now the City is taking a different approach to sheltering Denver’s new arrivals altogether — and appealing directly to local landlords. [Denverite]

Where Is It?

Last week’s answer: Terminal Bar at Union Station

  • My favorite incorrect guess was from Dan K., who said: “It's giving me Milk Market restroom vibes…” I feel you, Dan 😆

👏 Big claps for our correct guessers:

  • Heidi M. was the first to write in with the correct answer!
  • But Kelsey B., Kelly F., Mandy L., Dave M., Matthew S., and Denise P. weren’t far behind!

Who Really Won the Primaries? Plus, CPR's Layoffs and a Celebrity Stoner Fail

The primaries are over. While voter turnout was low, there’s still plenty to parse through in Denver’s results. Then, a national comedian blamed edibles and high altitude as the reason he bombed his set. Plus, the end of Denver’s Russell Wilson era and more news from this week.

Good news for baseball-loving vegans: Coors Field will debut its first plant-based concession stands in time for the 2024 MLB season. Whoop, whoop! 🥕🥬🍆
