What's CITY Talking About?

🚔 Bringing Noncitizens onto the Force

Two Denver City Council members are working on a bill proposal that would allow noncitizens (which includes DACA recipients and legal permanent residents) to be employed as police officers and firefighters. Noncitizens are currently eligible to work in nearly all other city departments. [Axios Denver]

❌ Clerk and Recorder Rejects Budget Cut Request

Mayor Johnston is asking all city agencies to make budget cuts in order to reallocate funds for migrant support efforts, but Denver Clerk and Recorder Paul López says that’s a firm “no” from his office. Because the clerk and recorder doesn’t directly report to the mayor, López is not required to comply. He says asking him to cut spending in an election year is “absolutely unacceptable.” [9News]

It’s a slippery slope when you talk about defunding elections. It’s a slippery slope especially now when our democracy is at stake.

💰 The City Will Pay You to Ride Your Bike

The city’s climate office hopes that paying Denverites to ride their bikes might get a few extra cars off the road. A batch of new pilot programs funded by the voter-approved Climate Protection Fund will pay residents upwards of $150 — plus the potential for bonuses — to ditch their gas-guzzler for two wheels over the summer. All Denver residents can apply. [Denverite]

🏥 ACLU Sues Children’s Hospital

The ACLU of Colorado has sued Children’s Hospital of Colorado on behalf of an 18-year-old transgender patient. The lawsuit claims that the hospital’s decision to discontinue gender-affirming surgery violates Colorado’s anti-discrimination laws. The complaint alleges that the hospital still permits those procedures as long as they’re for reasons other than treating gender dysphoria. [ACLU]

Something neat: Two Highlands Ranch high school seniors just received the nation’s first-ever Division I cornhole scholarships. They’ll be tossing bags next year at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, South Carolina 🎉
