What's CITY Talking About?

🚏 Expect RTD Delays This Weekend

RTD commuters passing through Union Station on the A, B, G, or N lines this weekend should be prepared for service disruptions and delays due to scheduled rail maintenance. Shuttles will be operating along the impacted routes. [Denverite]

🛫 DIA Traffic Continues to Soar

In 2021 and 2022, Denver International Airport ranked as the third busiest airport in the world, and early data from 2023 shows no signs of slowing. Last year is on record as being the airport’s busiest year ever, serving 77.8 million passengers and crushing monthly records. At the current rate, officials project that traffic could exceed 100 million annual passengers by 2030. [Denver Post]

🦺 Vigilantes, Transparency, and Other Concerns

As Mayor Mike Johnston’s new Yellow Vest Ambassador program begins to take shape, some City Council members are expressing concerns over the new public safety initiative, including a lack of oversight, a poor rollout, and the potential for it to create “vigilantes.” [Westword]

Where Is It?

Last week’s answer: Su Teatro Cultural and Performing Arts Center

  • Born at the peak of the Chicano Civil Rights Movement, Su Teatro began as a student-organized troupe out of CU Denver that “lived on the picket line, in the parks, and at the political rallies” of the time to tell their stories on stage. Now 50 years later, Su Teatro stands in Denver’s Westside as one of the longest running theater companies in Metro Denver, creating homegrown productions that speak to the experience and history of the Chicano community.

The mural pictured above was painted over the course of several years by MSU Denver students, under the guidance of famed Denver Chicano muralist and educator, Carlos Frésquez. The mural itself takes many forms as it wraps around the Denver Civic Theater building that houses Su Teatro. This portion features an image of Quetzalcoatl, the feathered serpent diety representing creation, rebirth, and wisdom in Aztec culture.

👏 A round of applause for our quickest correct guessers:

That’s all for today! See you next week 👋
