What's CITY Talking About?

🚏 Where Will the Migrants Go?

Beginning next week, Denver will start enforcing a length-of-stay limit for migrants living in city shelters. Officials estimate they’ll discharge up to 350 migrants a week once the policy is activated. In hopes of keeping those families off the streets, the city is offering free bus tickets to other places, hopefully somewhere with a lower cost of living. [Westword]

💸 Why So Much Rental Assistance Money Went Unused

Despite state officials securing millions in funding for rental assistance last year, tenants weren’t applying for help because of a simple mistake — a temporary notice saying new applicants weren’t being accepted was never taken down from the website. [CO Sun]

🏠 Does Colorado Need More Granny Flats?

State lawmakers are proposing a new bill that would require most Colorado cities to allow the construction of accessory dwelling units (ADUs, aka granny flats or carriage houses). The bill would come with a whopping $18 million price tag to help pay for construction. Opponents of the bill believe the state shouldn’t be able to override local development rules. [CPR]

Your Guide to February in Denver

It’s February, the month of love and that strange in-between season we call “false spring.” From solo dates to the movies to a cool way to celebrate nuptials on the ski slopes, we’ve rounded up a list of places to go, things to do, and delicious seasonal treats to try all around the Mile High City in our official guide to February.

That’s all for today! But I’ll leave you with a quote from a Colorado lawyer who caused a scene at a 2022 Phish concert in Mexico:

“‘Carini’ exploded my mind into one million sparkling bits of love dust through which I had to fight against the dying of the light and find my way to the stage. Unfortunately, I chose to do it by sprinting naked with my eyes closed through the crowd.”
