👀 Details emerge in Supreme Court break-in

January 17, 2024

Good morning, Denver! After the recent record-tying arctic blast, local temps are finally starting to heat back up with today’s high hovering around a toasty 47 degrees. However, the city will keep its emergency cold weather shelters active through Friday.

What's CITY Talking About?

🏎️ What’s Next for Thunder Mountain

The 150-acre site that used to host Morrison’s iconic Bandimere Speedway racetrack will soon house cars once again, but this time as a storage facility for automobiles awaiting auction. Last November, the Bandimere family announced they were looking for a buyer that would keep the spot’s “automotive legacy” alive. [BusinessDen 🔒]

🚨 Update: CO Supreme Court Break-In

Authorities have confirmed that a break-in at the Colorado Supreme Court earlier this month resulted in over $35 million in damages. Officials also confirmed the suspect’s actions were not politically motivated or connected to the high court’s recent ruling involving former President Donald Trump. [CPR]

👑 Miss Colorado Crowned Miss America

Miss Colorado, aka Madison Marsh, was crowned Miss America 2024 over the weekend. The 22-year-old US Air Force officer made history as the pageant’s first-ever active duty service member to win the title. [Denver Post]

🚧 What Happened to ¡Viva! Streets?

The popular car-free, pedestrian-centered event series from 2023 won’t be returning this year, and fans and advocates want to know who’s to blame. [City Cast Denver 🎧]

Looking for more ways to support Denver’s migrant community? One reader suggests checking out Casa de Paz. (@casadepazco / Instagram)

Hey loyal reader, what’s on your mind? 🤔

📚 I mentioned that my 2024 goal is to do more reading. Erin from Wash Park shares a tip:

  • “I wanted to give my ultimate tip / soap box. You only need to read 10 pages a day to get through a book a month, and it's way easier to set that goal!! Happy reading!”

🦺 Regarding Mayor Johnston’s new “Yellow Vest” public safety initiative, Laura from Fort Collins wonders:

  • “Why not flannel vests? Wouldn't that be WAY more Denver and Colorado in general? If you were visiting or new to the area, would you trust someone in a mustard yellow puffer vest to direct you where you need to go, or someone wearing the unofficial red-and-black checkered fleece uniform of Colorado mountain folk and craft beer hipsters alike?”

👐 We recently shared some resources for supporting Denver’s migrants. Cari R. wants to suggest another:

  • “I'd like to make a shameless plug for Casa de Paz — a volunteer-led group that meets folks being released from the migrant / asylum-seeker detention center in Aurora, gets them set up with warm clothes and a hot meal while helping to call their families and get flights booked to join those families around the country.”

No More ¡Viva! Streets, Parking Lot Robots, and Your Yellow Vest Comments

Why is Denver’s beloved car-free street celebration going away? What’s up with the robots prowling downtown’s parking garages? Could Mayor Johnston have done better than yellow puffer vest uniforms for his new safety ambassador program? We tackle these questions and more today on City Cast Denver.
