⚰️ Why CO has so many shady funeral homes
January 4, 2024
Good morning, Denver! While the stock show doesn’t technically start until Saturday, today marks the official kickoff of festivities with the annual Stock Show Parade — the only day of the year when you can witness a herd of longhorn cattle marching through downtown Denver 🐂 Here’s everything you need to know, including which streets will be closed for cow crossing 🤠

What's CITY Talking About?
🚍 No More Room For Migrants
Following the closure of a large migrant encampment near Speer and Zuni yesterday, city officials are offering to foot the bill for hundreds of one-way bus tickets to cities with resources that aren’t so depleted. According to the mayor, Denver has received more migrants per capita than any other city in the nation. [CO Sun]
- Worth noting: Dozens of migrants gathered outside the State Capitol on Jan. 1 to protest the planned sweep and plead for more help. [Westword]
⚰️ CO’s Funeral Industry Needs an Update
Colorado has the most relaxed mortuary regulations in the country — we are the only state that licenses funeral businesses instead of the people running them. Following recent instances of malpractice, fraud, corpse mishandling, and the illegal sale of body parts, Colorado regulators are recommending the state strengthen the industry’s licensing requirements. 🛍️ 16th Street Mall Project Goes Full Steam Ahead
The Downtown Denver Partnership got the greenlight from City Council to begin Phase II of its 16th Street Mall revitalization project. Council approved a $1.15 million contract to continue “reactivating” the business strip. The DDP project is happening simultaneously with the city’s $173 million reconstruction project that broke ground in 2022. [Denverite]
- In other City Council news: Council has decided to postpone the vote on the $88.5 million potential purchase of the former Denver Post building across from Civic Center Park. [BusinessDen 🔒]
- Dive deeper: City officials are working hard to breathe life back into the downtown economy, including by getting creative with all those empty office buildings. [City Cast Denver 🎧]

Tecovas Tip: How to Care for Leather Goods
You’ve picked the perfect pair of boots, a tooled leather belt, and maybe even a nice leather jacket. The best part about leather is that it ages beautifully — if you take care of it. So let’s talk about how to take care of your leather goods.
One of the most often overlooked elements of leather care is cleaning. After regular wear, be sure to brush off any debris from the leather — this will keep the leather from drying out and developing cracks.
It’s important to keep in mind is that leather is skin, and skin need moisturizing. Conditioning leather is the key to longevity.
And add a cedar boot insert to your leather boots to help them keep their shape when you’re not wearing them.
That’s all for today! I’ll be back tomorrow with more news from around the city, plus some event recs for your weekend!
