🇺🇸 So IS Trump off the ballot?? Maybe.

December 22, 2023

Good morning, Denver. We did it! We made it to Friday, and I made it to Christmas break! 👏 That’s right, the City Cast Denver team will be taking some time off to enjoy the holidays. We will return with our usual fresh, daily content on Tuesday, Jan. 2. BUT I do have a few special treats scheduled to drop into your inbox in the meantime, so keep an eye out! ✨

What's CITY Talking About?

🇺🇸 So Trump’s Off the Ballot … Right?

Maybe. The Colorado Supreme Court made a landmark decision this week when it ruled to remove former President Donald Trump from the state’s 2024 primary ballot — but it’s not a done deal. If SCOTUS agrees by Jan. 4 to take up an appeal of the ruling, it could put him back on the ballot, or it could remove him from ballots in all 50 states. [CPR]

💸 A Win for Colorado Wallets

Afraid to look at your post-holiday bank statement? Here’s a small comfort: Colorado saw the smallest year-over-year price increase for groceries nationwide, according to a recent ConsumerAffairs report. Colorado experienced a 2.9% hike from 2022 to 2023, while some states, like Pennsylvania, saw as much as an 8.2% spike. [ConsumerAffairs]

🦠 Measles Confirmed in Colorado

Officials have confirmed a case of the highly contagious disease in a state resident for the first time in five years. The patient recently returned from overseas travel. Health officials are warning unvaccinated people who were at DIA on Dec. 13 or at Children’s Hospital Colorado’s emergency room on the Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora Monday morning. [CO Sun]

🥶 Local Leaders Split on Cold Weather Ordinances

A city council committee narrowly advanced a set of bills Wednesday that would stop homeless encampment sweeps in freezing weather and would require city warming shelters to open when temps are 32 degrees instead of a frigid 20. Those opposed to the legislation — including Mayor Johnston — said the bills are too broad and need more workshopping. The full council will consider the proposal in the new year. [Denverite]
