🚓 Is Denver getting more violent?

What's CITY Talking About?

🚰 Thornton Wants Its Own Water

Way back in 1985, Thornton’s city manager knew water was only going to become more scarce, so the Denver suburb purchased 17,000 acres of farmland (and water rights) outside Fort Collins to eventually be piped downstate. Now nearly 40 years later, Thornton officials have renewed their efforts to build a 70-mile pipeline through northern Colorado so they can actually use that water. Negotiations on the exact route are ongoing. [New York Times 🔒; CO Sun]

🚓 Has Denver Grown More Violent?

FBI data shows that assaults causing serious bodily injury (aka aggravated assaults) have nearly doubled in Denver since 2012. Homicides have reportedly tripled in that same period. And all of it is happening unevenly, with Five Points and Montbello recording particularly large increases in rates of violent crime. [Denverite]

The Best Green Chile in Denver (and What Exactly Is Green Chile?)

Green chile is a prominent feature of Denver’s culinary identity. So what, exactly, makes the quintessential Mile High version of the dish? Is it an entrée, a side, a condiment, or some magical hybrid? And most crucially — where do you go in the city to get the “authentic” stuff? Today on the City Cast Denver podcast, we welcome back our official green chile correspondent Justine Sandoval to share her spicy, soupy findings.

That’s all for today! See ya back here tomorrow!
