⚖️ Verdict Announced in Elijah McClain Trial

Last Thursday, the criminal trial for two Aurora police officers involved in the 2019 death of Elijah McClain wrapped up following nearly three weeks of testimony. After two days of deliberation, the jury found officer Jason Rosenblatt not guilty on any counts. However, officer Randy Roedema was convicted of criminally negligent homicide and third degree assault — lesser charges than he was originally indicted for. He is scheduled to be sentenced in January. [CPR]

  • More to come: Two more trials are set to take place before the end of the year — one for a third Aurora police officer and one for the two paramedics who were on the scene that fateful night. [CPR]

Following a three-day staff walkout a few weeks ago, Kaiser Permanente and union leaders have reached a tentative agreement over wages and staffing levels. Local union president Stephanie Felix-Sowy called the agreement “nothing short of historic.” She said, “It’s a massive step in the right direction towards truly addressing the crisis in patient care.” [CO Sun]

🏠 Johnston Calls Off Encampment Sweep

Last week, Mayor Mike Johnston called off a planned city sweep of an encampment in Northeast Park Hill. In a test of whether he’d stay true to his word, councilwoman Shontel Lewis called the mayor to argue that the encampment didn’t meet the criteria he’d laid out to justify a sweep. Johnston visited the site himself and determined Lewis was right. [9News]

Everything You Need to Know About Prop HH

Proposition HH — it’s probably the most impactful item on Colorado ballots this year, but it’s also possibly the most confusing. Conservatives are calling it a “back-door TABOR killer,” and even Dems are divided on the issue, but Gov. Polis maintains it’s our best bet against rising property taxes. Today on the City Cast Denver podcast, producer Paul Karolyi talks with CPR politics reporter Andrew Kenney to try to break down the ballot measure from all sides.
