📈 Denver faces record-level evictions

October 5, 2023

Good morning, Denver! It’s Thursday, the most delicious day of the week here at Hey Denver, and I’m reading 5280 Magazine’s 2023 list of best Denver restaurants. Got any hot takes? Let me know 📧

What's CITY Talking About?

⚖️ The City Faces Record-Level Evictions

In August, Denver saw 1,196 eviction filings in county court — the highest number in the last five years. September followed with the second highest record at 1,174 filings, putting Denver at more eviction filings so far in 2023 than all of last year. At this rate, Denver is on track to break its 2008 record. [Denverite]

  • Speaking of housing: On Monday, City Council unanimously rejected a $6.4 million contract for homeless outreach services, but pushed forward a plan to reallocate $14.7 million to Johnston’s House1000 budget. [Denverite]

🚌 Can Denver Handle More Migrants?

Denver is currently sheltering over 2,500 migrants — more than it has at any point in the past year. City officials report that the city saw an average of 300 migrants arrive daily over the last week. In response, the city is limiting the amount of time adults can stay in Denver’s shelter system from 21 to 14 days, and increasing the stay limit for families with children from 30 to 37 days. • What are we doing about it? The city is currently working on a request for proposals for possible contractors to take over managing migrant arrivals. Mayor Johnston also allotted $20 million to migrant response in his 2024 budget proposal. [Denverite]
  • How to help: See where and how you can donate to the cause on the city’s Migrant Support webpage.
  • Flashback: Back in May during the last surge of migrant arrivals, we asked Denver Post reporter Saja Hindi to help us break it all down. [City Cast Denver 🎧]

🚫 Kaiser Employees on Strike

Kaiser Permanente patients may experience non-urgent care disruptions over the next couple days as nurses, lab techs, and other hospital staffers take to the picket lines for a three-day strike. The healthcare system failed to come to a new contract agreement with union leaders by the Oct. 4 deadline. Thirty Colorado clinics will be impacted (you can find the whole list here). Kaiser says it will contact patients who may be affected. [CPR]

Are Denver’s food halls on the decline? Could hot soup from a vending machine possibly be worth $13? It’s Thursday, so I got on the mic to join City Cast Denver host Bree Davies and producer Olivia Jewell Love to dish on all Denver’s latest dining scene goss. Plus, we’ve got recommendations for your upcoming weekend.

That’s all for today! Let’s do this again tomorrow.
