What's CITY Talking About?

🚌 Denver Prepares for More Migrants

Denver is currently sheltering approximately 1,000 migrants, which is nearly double the number from just one month ago. Denver has not yet needed to mobilize its Emergency Operation Center like it did during the last waves in May and December, but as busloads of migrants continue to arrive in Denver, the pressure is building yet again. Mayor Mike Johnston is reportedly looking for a new contractor to manage the city’s migrant response services. [Denverite]

  • How we got here: Back in May during the last surge of migrant arrivals, we asked Denver Post reporter Saja Hindi to help us break it all down. [City Cast Denver 🎧]

🚧 New Sidewalk Repair Program May Be Postponed

City Councilwoman Amanda Sandoval has requested a six-month delay to the start of the city’s new sidewalk repair program that is to be funded by fees collected from Denver property owners. The launch date is scheduled for Jan. 1, 2024, but Sandoval wants to give a task force time to do some fine-tuning to the program. Her concern is inequity in who gets charged how much, which is currently determined by the size of your property. [Denver Post 🔒]

🏠 What to Expect From Johnston’s ‘Micro-Communities’

Details continue to emerge about Mayor Mike Johnston’s proposal for “micro-communities” to shelter Denver’s unhoused folks. Last month the mayor revealed the 11 locations across the city he is considering for the sites. The latest info to come out includes move-in dates in November and December; an estimated minimum cost of $3 million to build a site and operate it for a year; plus rules on pets, substance use, and quiet hours.
