🌊 Why environmentalists are fighting with Denver Water

September 11, 2023

Good morning, Denver. I’d like to give up a little space at the top of this morning’s newsletter to remember our fallen 9/11 heroes 🇺🇸

What's CITY Talking About?

🚔 Denver Police Officer Pleads Not Guilty

The Denver police officer who injured six people when he fired his gun into a crowded downtown street last summer pleaded not guilty at a court appearance on Friday. Earlier this year, a grand jury indicted the officer on multiple charges, including reckless endangerment and reckless and knowing assault. The case is set to go to trial in February next year. 🏓 Bummer News for Glendale Pickleballers

Last week, the Glendale City Council voted unanimously to ban pickleball on local tennis courts. Officials claim pickleball players have caused $100,000 in damages on court surfaces. However, the city is building dedicated pickleball courts at Glendale Park, which are expected to be complete this fall. [Denver7]

🌊 Environmentalists Fight Denver Water

A coalition of activists is asking a federal judge to halt a Denver Water project expanding Gross Reservoir in Boulder County. Their court filing describes “devastating effects” on the local ecology and warns of increased demand on the Colorado River. The coalition filed its first lawsuit to block the project in 2018 (it was dismissed), then they appealed in 2021 (also dismissed). [Denver Post 🔒]

The Best Bakeries in Denver

Last week on the podcast, you heard me talk about the brand new 5280 Pastry Co-op, a new organization of Denver-based bakers. We shared some of our favorite local bakeries on the show, then asked you all to shout out yours!

Holly M. would like to recommend Ana’s Norwegian Bakeri in Littleton: “[It’s also] getting one of the pop-ups on the 16th Street Mall. Her story is great, the baked goods are amaaaaazing, and she also creates a great community spot for Norwegian and Norwegian-Americans here, including a monthly gathering of Norwegian speakers and people who are trying/wanting to learn Norwegian!”

Margaret L. suggests Grateful Bread: “They are only open on Saturdays for retail but have a very loyal following in the Golden area. Be prepared to wait in line. They really shine with their breads and cookies.”

Thomas D.’s favorite is Knead the Bakery in Arvada: “[It’s] next to the DMV at 6510 Wadsworth Blvd. Stephanie and Alex are multi-year winners of the Taste of Arvada. DO NOT CONFUSE THEM WITH KNEADERS!”
