What's CITY Talking About?

📚 New Westwood Library Needs a Name

Denver Public Libraries is inviting the community to submit name recommendations for its brand new Westwood branch at 3300 W. Nevada Place. Potential namesakes can be a person or a place — as long as they’re related to the cultural and historical values of the neighborhood (and follow some other parameters). The deadline to submit a suggestion is Sept. 29. [Denverite]

🛢️ EPA Fines Suncor … Again

The Suncor oil refinery in Commerce City has come to a settlement agreement with the EPA after the environmental agency found the plant was producing fuel packed with excessive pollutants. Suncor is being ordered to pay a $161,000 fine, as well as fork over $600,000 to purchase “clean” lawn equipment for ozone-heavy metro counties. In its defense, Suncor officials said the EPA’s allegations need more context. This fine is just the latest in a years-long battle between Suncor and the EPA. [CO Sun]

  • 🎧 Look back: We invited Denver Post reporter Noelle Phillips onto the City Cast Denver podcast earlier this year to help us understand where Suncor fits in the larger picture of environmental issues facing Colorado.

🚩 No Officers Charged in Death of Jor’Dell Richardson

Arapahoe County prosecutors have determined that the Aurora police officers responsible for fatally shooting 14-year-old Jor’Dell Richardson in June were legally justified in their actions. The officers will face no criminal charges. Police report that Richardson appeared to have been participating in a robbery occurring in an Aurora strip mall. He was reportedly armed with a pellet gun that closely resembled a real pistol. [CO Sun]

Today on City Cast

South Broadway on the Brink, Hypocrite Activist Outed, and UFOs

Mayor Mike Johnston is hard at work trying to end homelessness in his first term, but as Denverite reporter Kyle Harris learned when he spent 21 hours at a late-night calzone shop on Broadway, the city might not be able to wait that long. Host Bree Davies and producer Paul Karolyi talk to Kyle about what he saw that night and all the other stories that mattered this week.

[I am someone] who is defending my legal boundaries and caring a great deal about my community, which is overrun by junkies and criminals. I simply hope it doesn’t claim my life, as it has with others.
Ben Todd, Co-owner, Full Afterburner Calzones

That’s all for this week! See ya back here on Monday 👋
