What's CITY Talking About?
💚 Denver Aims to Protect Local ‘Legacy Businesses’
The pandemic had devastating effects on Denver small businesses, forcing dozens of longtime, local mainstays to shut their doors for good. Now, city officials are trying to help right the ship with a brand new Legacy Business Program. Businesses that qualify (locally-owned, independent, at least 10-years old, and in good standing with the city and state) will be offered networking, training, and promotion opportunities with support from the city. ⚖️ Legal Gun-Buying Age Will Not Change — For Now
Earlier this month, a district court judge blocked the rollout of a new state law raising the legal gun-purchasing age to 21. The law was blocked after gun rights advocates argued it was a violation of Second Amendment rights for 18 to 20-year-olds. Gov. Polis has filed an appeal with the 10th Circuit Court and requested the law temporarily go into effect while court proceedings play out — which could take months or even years — but this week, federal judges denied that request. 🍹 Why Aren’t Denverites Sipping and Strolling?
Arvada just became the latest city in the metro to approve a common consumption area — visitors can now stroll around Olde Town with an alcoholic beverage in hand. Denver OK’d common consumption licensing two years ago, so why aren’t we sipping our cocktails on the go? We dig into that and more food news on today’s podcast episode. [City Cast Denver 🎧]
