👀 Why Johnston postponed his second sweep
August 24, 2023
Good morning, Denver! It’s gonna be another hot one! 🌡️ But don’t worry, it’s supposed to start cooling down tomorrow ahead of a gray and rainy weekend 😮💨 ☔

What's CITY Talking About?
👀 All Eyes on Johnston’s Second Sweep
City officials are citing a shooting in the North Cap Hill neighborhood on Monday afternoon as the reason for an impending sweep at an encampment in the area. The sweep was scheduled for Wednesday morning (giving those living at the site little more than 24 hours notice), but after advocates appealed to Mayor Johnston Tuesday night, he agreed to postpone the sweep until Thursday. Camp residents say they’re being unfairly blamed for the incident. [Denverite]

🌿 Denver Cracks Down on Unlicensed Pot-Friendly Events
So far this summer, the city’s Department of Excise & Licenses has issued warnings to eight different venues and event organizers for holding weed-friendly events somewhere other than one of Denver’s three properly permitted venues. Organizers argue they’re not breaking any local marijuana laws because their events are private, but the crux of the issue appears to be a debate over the city’s definition of a “private event.” [Westword]
🤯 Alan Turing’s Stolen Property Was Here All Along
This week, U.S. government officials formally returned the famed mathematician / codebreaker’s stolen memorabilia to an all-boys boarding school in the U.K. In what is an utterly bizarre and perplexing story, the items were stolen decades ago by a Colorado woman who was obsessed with Turing. U.S. authorities seized the keepsakes from her possession in 2018. [Denver Post 🔒]
