August 16, 2023

Hey there! This is Natalia Aldana, a newsletter editor at City Cast, filling in for Peyton Garcia today.

Let’s start our newsletter friendship with some amazing news from DIA — Breezy the cat has been found! A Southwest Airlines crew found the gorgeous Bengal who was lost for 24 hours after an unfortunate panic-inducing accident. Finally, some airport news we can feel good about 😻

What's CITY Talking About?

Denver Police Officer Fatally Shot Man Holding a Marker

Brandon Cole, 36, was fatally shot earlier this month after police responded to a 911 call reporting potential domestic violence. Body-worn camera footage shows that Denver police first shot Cole with a stun gun and then with a duty weapon. The officer who shot Cole twice said she believed he was holding a knife. The District Attorney’s Office is determining whether the officer, whose name has not been released, acted legally. [Associated Press]

What’s the Future of DIA’s Peña Boulevard?

High air travel and increasing local traffic have made traffic delays on the road connecting commuters to Denver International Airport more common. As city and airport leaders work to improve the ways travelers get to the airport, an investigative team at DIA is seeking feedback from the community. You can voice your concerns at in-person meetings or through an online comment form. [Denver7]

Denver City Council Skeptical of Term Limit Reform

As part of their first official meeting, the City Council’s charter review committee discussed the possibility of drafting a 2024 ballot question on adjusting the amount of time local elected officials are allowed to serve. Service time for Denver’s elected offices is currently capped at three consecutive four-year terms. But council members say changing term limits is “a solution in search of a problem.” [Denver Post]

Goodbye to Colorado’s Oldest Bridge

The 112-year-old Alameda Bridge over I-25 and the South Platte River in Denver is being replaced. The Colorado Department of Transportation says the bridge is also one of the state’s most deficient, as regulators have long raised concerns over the safety of the bridge. The construction project is expected to end in December 2024. [9News]

Denver Chatter

🎧 The City Cast Denver podcast has been generating a lot of buzz! Here’s what some of you had to say lately:

The ‘Seclusion Room’ Scandal at DPS, Pricey Port-a-Potties, and Roller Coasters

  • “I wonder why DPS doesn’t consult the Pediatric Mental Health Institute (PMHI), part of the University of Colorado (School of Med), with clinicians (child experts mental health) practicing thru CHCO.” – Cora C.
  • “Yes sharps containers are SO needed as part of a much more comprehensive harm reduction strategy, but safe needle disposal is also important for folks with diabetes who may need to inject insulin.” – Nancy B.

Drivers Hitting Stuff, Downtown’s Bounceback, and DIA Art Needs a Nickname

  • “Good episode and a good reminder that Colorado drivers are trash. Plenty of road rage and just lots of unskilled drivers too. Also somehow for mountain people, Colorado ppl can’t drive in weather.” – Eugene B.

🐶 And, we got this question about dog parks:

  • “How would I get the ball rolling on getting more central dog parks? There is plenty of real estate at Wash Park or even Ruby Hill park to put up a fence and make a dog park. I’m about to lose it.” – Anna N.

Do you have any dog park insight for Anna? If you have experience with organizing a community dog park, or have some thoughts on the subject, send us an email!
