August 14, 2023

Hey, neighbor! Tired of airport security lines? Why not buy your very own airport, where you can store 78 of your favorite planes?

What's CITY Talking About?

✈️ A Historic Month for DIA

According to traffic reports, nearly seven million people passed through DIAin June 2023, making it the airport’s busiest month on record. DIA is the second largest domestic hub in the country and recently completed a massive gate expansion, both of which account for the rapidly growing traffic (and those alarmingly long TSA lines). 📚 Blair-Caldwell African American Research Library Returns

The library reopened its doors over the weekend after extensive renovations. Aside from structural and accessibility upgrades, branch supervisor Jameka Lewis says they redesigned the library to purposefully center Blackness while continuing to be a valuable resource for African American history and culture. “Black history, and learning about it, is not just for Black people,” said Lewis. The application will open at 9 a.m. on August 16 and will remain open through August 21, after which 2,000 recipients will be randomly selected. [CPR]

Are Vacant Offices the Next Big Thing in Housing?

Downtown Denver has a lot of big, beautiful office buildings that are… empty. Simultaneously, the city is facing an ongoing shortage of housing options, particularly affordable ones. Which all leads to one big question: Could some of those vacant office buildings be converted into apartments or condos or some kind of office-shaped domicile? The answer is yes, kind of. Urban planner, real estate economist, CU Denver professor Brad Segal joins to talk about the potential for a office-to-housing pipeline and the future of downtown.

That’s it! Catch ya tomorrow. ✌️
