✊ Globeville renters demand livable conditions
August 7, 2023
Good morning, Denver! According to NPR, scientists have officially confirmed something we all already knew in our hearts: Petting dogs is good for your health 🐾 🥰

What's CITY Talking About?
🚗 It’s ‘Slow Down and Move Over’ Day
Beginning today, Colorado’s “move over” law — which mandates drivers should move one lane over to give space to emergency vehicles stopped on the side of the road — will expand to include all vehicles stopped on street shoulders. In honor of the change, Gov. Polis declared today “Slow Down, Move Over Day.” [9News]
✊ Globeville Tenants Unionize
Renters at The Elisabetta apartment complex in Globeville have formed a tenants’ union in order to demand better living conditions. Residents say management has ignored ongoing maintenance issues — like leaks, flooding, and structural damage — and have shown disregard for tenant safety, leaving the building’s doors unlocked for anyone to enter. [Denverite]
- Sound familiar? Tenants’ unions have become something of a trend in recent months as metro Denver renters band together to demand better living conditions.
🚩 DPS Investigates a ‘Seclusion Room’
Denver Public Schools officials are investigating a “seclusion room” at McAuliffe International School. An anonymous whistleblower came forward with allegations that the room — complete with a barrel-latch lock — was used to discipline students of color. The investigation comes one month after former McAuliffe principal Kurt Dennis was controversially terminated. There is currently a petition to reinstate Dennis circulating in the community that has already garnered over 6,000 signatures. [Denverite]
- 👀 Looking ahead: The Denver school board is scheduled to vote on reinstating Dennis on Aug. 24. Several board members have confirmed, in light of this investigation, they will be voting to uphold Dennis’ termination.
