What's CITY Talking About?

🏫 Beloved Denver Teacher Announces Political Foray

Chicano Studies teacher and community organizer Tim Hernández announced his candidacy for the recently vacated House District 4 seat. HD4 encompasses the Northside neighborhoods where Herenández grew up and once taught, as well as some Westside communities. The position was previously held by state Rep. Serena Gonzales-Gutierrez, who stepped down when she was elected to Denver City Council in April. If elected, Hernández hopes to focus on school funding, teacher pay, and gun violence prevention. • 🗳️ Next steps: A vacancy committee of Democratic precinct organizers will be in charge of selecting the new HD4 representative at an August 26 election. Also vying for the seat are Rochelle Galindo, a former House representative, and Cecelia Espenoza, an attorney and former appellate judge.
  • 🔎 Refresher: Tim Hernández made waves on the DPS scene last year after calling out the district for firing him under murky circumstances, which incited classroom walkouts and protests form Northside students. [City Cast Denver 🎧]

♻️ Recycling Success!

Denver’s new trash and recycling program (more frequent recycling pickup and new trash collection fees) is showing promising success rates. In the first six months of this year, the city saw a 12% increase in recyclable material collection compared to the same time last year. Currently, the national average for landfill diversion is 32% — Denver is only at 26%, but that’s much better than Colorado’s paltry 16%. [BusinessDen🔒]
