🏫 Is DPS still racially segregated?
August 2, 2023
Good morning, Denver! If a dip in the Cherry Creek Reservoir was on the schedule, you’ll need to take a raincheck — Colorado Parks and Wildlife has shut down sections of the lake due to toxic blue-green algae bloom. You can still boat and fish, but all skin-to-water contact should be avoided by humans and animals.

What's CITY Talking About?
🏠 City Approves First ‘Supportive Housing’ Development
On Monday, City Council approved a number of contracts for the construction of Warren Village III, Denver’s first “supportive housing development,” which will accept city-provided housing vouchers and be funded by the voter-approved Homelessness Resolution Fund. The complex will offer 79 “supportive housing units” for families experiencing homelessness, 10 affordable housing units available for rent, and on-site childcare. City officials expect Warren Village III to begin leasing in the fall of 2024. [Denverite]
🚎 Denver Youth Can Ride RTD for Free!
Beginning September 1, RTD riders who are 19 or younger can use the bus and light rail system for free thanks to a new pilot program from the transportation agency. The change comes on the heels of the RTD board’s recent “historic” decision to reduce fares across the board. [Chalkbeat; CPR]
🏫 Are Denver Schools Still Racially Segregated?
According to a new study from the Bueno Center for Multicultural Education at the University of Colorado Boulder and the Latino Education Coalition, Denver’s schools “remain intensely segregated by race and family income,” particularly impacting Latino students. The study’s authors say these findings affect things like access to specialized school services and graduation rates. [Chalkbeat]
- 🔎 Dive deeper: Back in February, to mark the 50th anniversary of the Keyes v. School District No. 1 desegregation ruling, we talked with Chalkbeat reporter Melanie Asmar about her recent project with Historic Denver to look back at the half-century fight to desegregate Denver schools and the challenges that still remain today. Denver Chatter
Hey loyal reader, what’s been on your mind? 🤔
🚽 I recently asked if there were any bathrooms in Denver worthy of winning the title of “America’s Best Restroom.” Natasia P. had some knowledge to drop:
- “A bathroom in Colorado Springs DID win a couple of years ago! I remember seeing it on the morning news, and was honestly pretty proud being from Colorado Springs.”
🥊 Regarding our recent Salt Lake City v. Denver rivalry episode, Ben R. says:
- “Wow! Very surprised everyone is saying Denver and SLC are not rivals. Denver and SLC are 100% rivals because they are geographically close. Now, it is a bit of a big brother/little brother situation because Denver is much larger, but really that’s all it takes.”
🏙️ On the other hand, Red would like to suggest a different contender:
- “I propose Sacramento, California. Both of us are capital cities to our states. Both are right at the foothills of mountains that we both complain about the traffic going up to. Politically, both cities are pretty liberal. Both are big on their breweries and both are big on their outdoor activities. There are just so many things that we share in common with Sacramento.”
🎷 After sharing the news that legendary local jazz venue El Chapultepec will live again, Russell J. said:
- “If we’re talking new jazz in Denver, don’t sleep on the Orchid!”
🚰 I shared some tips for conserving water around the house. Anata W. adds:
- “Denver Water customers are eligible for rebates here. One is eligible for two toilet rebates (up to $100 each) per 10 years. We recently replaced two of the toilets in our house with more water-efficient ones (which happened to cost exactly $100 each, so we only paid our handyman for the installation), and the whole process was super simple.”
