July 25, 2023

Good morning, Denver! It’s gonna be a HOT one 🌡️🌡️ We’re looking at temps in the 90s all week. So crank the AC, turn up the swamp cooler, or head to one of the city’s libraries for indoor reprieve. Stay cool out there!

What's CITY Talking About?

✏️ DPS Releases Secret Meeting Recording

After a shooting at East High School in March, the Denver school board voted to bring school resource officers (SROs) back to Denver campuses (the board voted to remove them back in 2020). The meeting where that decision took place has been kept tightly under wraps until now. The board agreed to release a redacted recording of the meeting, but only after local media outlets sued the district for violating the Open Meetings Act. [Chalkbeat]

🚔 The End of the ‘Kansas Two-Step’

Last week, a federal judge ruled the Kansas Highway Patrol is violating Colorado drivers’ Fourth Amendment right against unreasonable search and seizures. In a practice that has become known as the “Kansas Two-Step,” the state’s highway patrol officers unjustly target motorists crossing the border into Kansas from Colorado and subject them to vehicle searches under the guise of a standard traffic stop looking for marijuana (which is not legal in Kansas in any capacity). The judge plans to impose nearly four pages of new restrictions on KHP’s policing practices. [AP via CO Sun]

📚 More Library Access for Everyone!

Several Denver library branches have expanded their operating hours, thanks to the brand new Denver Public Library Fund that voters passed in 2022. Funding comes from a property tax increase (about $4.19 per month for the average Denver homeowner) and results in an additional $32 million a year for the Denver public libraries.   [Denverite]

An ‘Ugly’ Bike Lane, the Casa Bonita Union Fight, and Barbie Mania

It’s Tuesday and host Bree Davies and producer Paul Karolyi are breaking down all the local stories that matter. Residents in the Congress Park and Country Club neighborhoods are not happy about a new, protected bike lane that they say makes the historic parkway along 7th Avenue “ugly.” Plus the Casa Bonita saga continues, Barbie mania takes over Denver, and a listener asks why people still think downtown is dead when it’s full of people.

Before you go: If you think this heat is crazy weather, how about the fact that a tornado touched down on Pikes Peak last week?? 🌪️
